View Full Version : What are you planning on doing with your PS3?
Just a quick poll to see what people are planning on doing once the PS3 becomes available.
Please keep comments troll and flame free.
I'm also aware that some people may buy more than one unit if they're planning on flipping them, but I'm trying to keep the poll simple.

Selling it on ebay, That is if i get one. ;)
Selling it on ebay, That is if i get one. ;)
I'd do that if I could afford one to begin with. If people really want a PS3 when they run out, I guess eBay is a good source of making profit.

360 has sold me for there lineup recently of what games they have for it so PS3 will have to wait.

I would sell it on eBay providing I can get more than 1 problem is you know store workers will probably pre-order 2 as they'll get a discount. Then sell them on eBay themselves for the sheer profit they'll get. The local store GAME near me the staff where buying them then selling them on eBay. Gamers who Q'd all night and couldn't get 1 in the end found out and went totally crazy with threats to sue. But these are rumors I have heard not sure if they where true or not.

Store workers do not get discounts on consoles, unless they inflated the prices on the consoles themselves to fit the demand.

Sony reckon they'll have 3 million consoles up and ready for launch day hmm does that mean 1 mill for Japan, 1 mill for USA & the rest for Europe. Sounds like a lot of consoles for each part of the world but there's more than 1 mill people in each. Hoepfully production will not be like PS2 and we'll have constant supplies on shelfs with like a week pre-order.

when I worked part time at a games and music store (about 8 years ago when I was in school, so it might have changed) we got staff discount on consoles, but I think it was only 10% instead of the normal 25.

Xbox and PS2 when they where released. I worked at Best Buy and we got zero discount on those systems. Games we got no discounts with either. Hardware now we got a little discount but still it wasn't much. At least when I left we paid 5% over the cost of items.
As matter fact there still is no discount at on those systems let alone the 360 either. Got a friend thats a manager there still and they don't have any discounts on them.

It might simply be that there is a generally bigger mark up on stuff like this in the UK, so stores can better afford to give staff discount.

Probably true according to the poll on this forum, but there will be plenty of buyers. The XBOX 360 was selling for thousands last winter, remember? Initial release price means nothing to the parent that wants to get the perfect Christmas gift. Even if the price is inflated on eBay.

Coming from a parent, initial price means A LOT. There are a small minority that have the cash or that, like you said, price doesn't matter, but most of us it does.
I was sure PS3 would sell out the first day, but now I am having second thoughts with this poll. I thought more people would paln on keepint it. I guess since we'll likely have under a million at launch (here in the US) they should easily sell out still, but it will be interesting to see if eay prices are very inflated with all the sellers.

Either way we look at it. It sells out, price inflation comes right away expecially with the holiday season right around the corner. Even if theres another shipment before X-Mas and parents really want it for there kids they will spend the money to make sure and have it otherwise have a ****ed off kid through the holiday.
uh...

But inflation won't come or it won't go very high if there aren't people buying them to keep them. With a thousand auctions and limited buyers things won't go for 200% like they were with the 360. Now I am not saying that will happen, just that this poll is very interesting and brings up the very real risk people take when they speculate and price gauge for profit.
And I am sure there are rare parents that will buy little Jonny whatever he wants at any price, but most won't and I think you are looking more at the 20, 30 and 40 somethings with cash to blow on their favorite hobby.
Heck, only 1 of my son's friends have a 360 and thats probably dads just like my sons is. They are middle class kids though, a few upper middle class, but it seems like these new consoles are for the adults/teens at this point.
That would be some interesting research for a high school paper for one of you guys.

I'll get one if and only if I'm confident I could make a killing reselling it. I have little use for consoles, and far less use for one manufactured by a company who's abused user rights.
I heard from a person who works for $ony that the PS3 can turn into a robot when no one is looking and steal money from peoples wallets and install rootkits on alarm clocks and toaster ovens.
I for one will not buy one.

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, keep that quiet. Microsoft might catch wind of this!!! :D
Back to topic....
Only 2 million will be released world-wide at launch. America will be lucky to get half a million units.
so assuming only half a million is going to hit the USA, probably only half of that number will be on ebay. 250,000 units. Probably less. Because the majority of the buyers will be probably 20 - 30 year olds that can't wait to play it, and don't want to wait another month to have a CHANCE of getting it. and definetly don't want to wait 4+ months before they can find it in the store.
Just think about school, how many kids were there that had the best car, the newest sound system, the sweetest TV, all so they could show off to their friends. They will be the ones who will shell out the cash to get this system off of ebay for $1500 bucks ( I wouldn't pay that much! ). but there are ALOT of people who will pay, just to have it at day one.
so concidering all the people that will buy it, and keep it, the people who buy it and PLAN on putting it on Ebay, but crack because they want it, the parants who will put it up for a christmas present, there might be only 100,000 units on Ebay for sell. There will be a huge demand for this thing. And if sony can keep marketing up, demand and hype will only get bigger and bigger.
Sure, 100,000 units on Ebay sounds like alot, but if only 500,000 hit the U.S. The majority of the people that have the money to blow, probably won't be getting one at the store. Leaving them with ONLY ebay to get ahold of one without having to wait.
And history likes to repeat itself. We are worried we won't make a profit off of Ebay from the PS3, but it WILL happen. it ALWAYS does. and honestly, the price for the PS3 on Ebay will probably be higher than what it was for the 360. Because so many people on Ebay will be setting a Min. bid, because this time around, they KNOW they can make a $1000 profit from each console. We will also see alot more " Buy it now" for $2000, and $2500. And even though those prices are extremly steep, the buyers have 2 choices. Wait...or spend. And concidering how america's Mind-set is " MUST HAVE IT NOW " type of mentality....they will sell for that price.
sooo...yes i'm still going to be putting mine up on Ebay :D
and even if it doesn't sell....oh well...I still have a PS3 don't I??

Haha , no doubt. I wont ever be buying it, but I think if I did, i would ebay it, or take off the casing, and put my comp in it. Or mayby just put the case inside a giant fishtank. The game parts I would lay over a giant 9 dollar fan from Walmart, but thats me and Im often called wierd.

if all our local stores actually had any reserves left, i'd be probably buy the 600 dollar unit, and hope i can sell it for at least 2,000 bucks. That will yield a 1,400 dollar profit. possibly more, depending on demand.
I'm working on saving money to fix my teeth, and i KNOW that if i could get ahold of one of these, the profit i make, including what i have now would easily pay for the dental bills, AND leave me extra spending cash to get myself a Wii.
Though eventually, i WILL get a PS3. And keep it. Most likely, it will STILL be at that 600 dollar pice, but i really want some of those games comming out on it! But sadly, that won't happen till at least a year, untill sony can get enough units out, where you can walk into walmart and pick one up easy.

On a serious note, if I get one it will be from one of you selling it on ebay. I'm far too lazy to stand in line. However, I'm also far too poor to buy one right away and I never buy new consoles because I'm just not into them that much. So when I buy a PS3 on ebay, it'll be some time from now and it'll be for relatively cheap.

What you saw some pre-release units sold? Theres a bit of difference from 25 units available and 2 million for sale.
I seriosly don't see any kind of a market over $1000. There will be a few nuts, but very few. The Wii and 360 will give parents a nice choice of a next gen system for a good price instead of fighting for a black market unit and people may (big may) actually know that the PS3 isn't head and shoulders aboce the 360 like Sony's marketing would lead people to believe.
Heck, they may not even have a North American release before christmas. Either way if PS3's ae selling regularly on ebay for $1000+ I'll be surprised, if they sell for $2000+ regularly I'll eat my laptop

I got the 20gig model :santa:
I'm in small town MN now, and there were already full lines Wednesday night at BB and Walmart (the other places were only getting 2 or so). Target said that they wouldn't allow lines until Thursday morning, so I camped out there, starting around 6am. I was #10 in line until the Target manager came out to tell us there were only 6 available, so 3 people in front of me left. 2 hours later, the manager tells us they just got in 2 20gigs, so I was guaranteed a spot! (yay!) So 26 hours of waiting in line in sub 20 degree weather scored me a new PS3 with extra controller and Resistance. It was quite an event, and the small Target group was like a mini-party...until it froze us half to death.
I fully plan to ebay the thing, but the box just BEGS me to open it and play. This will be my first time selling anything on ebay, so when I figure out exactly what to do, I hope to get my auction up. Too bad the 20gig edition seems to be selling poorly though. If I can't sell it for more than 1k, I think I'll just keep it. Either way, I think it's a win/win situation.
In retrospect, I think this cheaper edition isn't too bad a deal. And the waiting was not as horrible as everyone made it out to be. Heck, we even got in the local paper here!
And to all the people that say it's a waste of time, I had absolutely nothing going on Thursday and I still made it to classes in time today. If I wasn't camping out, I probably would just be playing video games anyways. :p Good Friday indeed. :)
