I was thinking about all of these air flow ducting ideas and I was wondering. If I put a 120mm fan directly over my current fan and heatsink with the duct to blow it right on them, will this hurt my heatsink fan which is running at 7000rpm (I don't mind that it can be heard in the next room)? I have been thinking about doing this for my cousins P!! 400 system as well which we are going to be using for the cable modem gateway. I think that we will probably be overclocking the CPU as well. I just started getting into this area and need to know also if there is anything special that I need to do to overclock this CPU? (the 400)

Thanks for all the help!!!!!

if you are gonna duct to the cpu, then take the original fan off...i tried doubling up the fans like you are talking about and it did nothing but raise the temps...trust me, its not as good as you might think, so if you do duct, then take the 7k fan off

Hoot had a really good pic, but I could not find it. Oh well...

What sometimes happens is that a processor fan will recycle heated air. The fan will push air though the heat sink, then that warmed air is still sitting near the heatsink where it is again sucked into the fan and reheated. What you get is a churning cloud of hot air. What I have is a fan (actually a pair of 120mm) blowing in the general direction of the processor fan. This moves that cloud away and reduces temps by a fair amount.

I ordered a 120mm/127CFM fan to do just that sans the original fan on my DOrb3 but I never got to do it. My new set up has dropped my temps from 50°C - 43°C load. Try it with & without to see which one really works better for you.

when I run ducts I either go through the case side, lower front ( after removing extraneous metal and plastic!) or unused 5 1/4 bays: whichever way I go, it brings in room air to the cpu fan and does NOT allow case air into the duct. I have been very successful with this ducting- one rig (with a LOUSY case!) has case temp of 39c and cpu temp of 41c.

Thanks 4 the info! I am not very good with metric yet, so, is 105F to hot for an AMD 1.4Ghz to be running at? Thanks again 4 all of your help:)

that sounds fine as a temp although get used to thinking of CPU temps in Metric. I don't know the conversion factor at all but I know what temps are good/bad in Celsius but am a ditz in the fareignheit scale even though the temps actually register as a temp rather than some number. I believe your temp is below 50C so that is fine.
