View Full Version : XP or 2K?
Well, I'm still running 98SE at the moment. But I definitly want to change to XP or 2K. Maily because of the improved stability.
I have no experience at all with Win 2K and I am reading about compatibility problems and all that. Is it really that bad?
I like to play a game from time to time (well, all the time actually :D ) so I guess that would be kind of a problem.
On the other hand: I like to "re-install" my entire system every coulple 'o months (norton Ghost) and I don't want to change that habit (be it good or bad). but Win XP doesn't support Ghost anymore, or so I hear! And then there is this activation thing...
Oh, and to keep things simple: I would have to pay over about 100$ to get the upgrade for Win Xp, while I can get win 2K for free. Unfortunatly, money is an issue right now... :(
Can someone please make up my mind :D ???

well i would recommend xp anyday
i think it's just teh same as win2k but with all the nicer looks and stuff
same functions and evetything in win98se is in winxp but they are at different locations only
I will not be running XP at any time in the near future- I'm all for preventing piracy to make software cheaper, but I reconfigure systems too often to use it: I'd be talking to MS 5 or 6 times a year!
That said, I am a BIG fan of Win2K: fast, stable and compatibility is not as bad as some say, although it IS an issue!
Most old dos and some win16 apps don't run, and a lot of the newest, fanciest games won't run either- but a surpising number will, so check it out before committing. Find out if whatever games you play will run.
If the games you want won't work in Win2K, I'd say to go with a dual-boot: Win98se (gaming and compatibility) and Win2K (speed, stability>0

Have a read of NT compatible for compatibility issues regarding Microsoft OS's based on NT

Since it wont cost you anything for Win2k, ;) i'd just do a dual boot with that and 98.
I went from Win XP to Win 2K. Xp is nice but very bloated in my opinion. It took me a lot of tweaking to get it to run good. I'd recommend around 512 megs of ram. Win 2k is much faster in my opinion, And just as stable. As far as compatibility with games. From what I've read pretty much all newer games will play on it. The only games I've tried so far are Red Faction, and Need for Speed 5 PU. Both work great. And I cannot notice a difference in speed for gaming vs Win 98. There maybe a difference but it's not big enough for me to really notice.
Research on the games you play if they all work good with Win2k then go for the win2k if not get the Win xp :)
If win2000 is free, why not give it a try. I'm using it right now and love it (thought win ME is the best :D)
I have to agree with going with Win2K.
I've got both and have used both and while I have no real qualms with XP, it was just an overbloated rendition of 2000.
It did include a few features I liked, however, nothing I would miss in the least. I found myself immeditely looking for the "Change to Classic" desktop style option to free up the obviously large amount of resources the new interface uses up.
TCP/IP stack seemed to be a bit more refined than Win2K is at it's default, however, this is taken care of easily by registry editing or some quick-use patches that are available at most tweak sites.
Games run just fine for me and as long as you don't ANCIENT hardware, any device cards you have should work fine by now. I actually had a much harder time finding "good" drivers in XP than in Win2K since it has well over a year under its belt for development.
Personally, I don't think XP is near being worth $100 more than Win2K.
ewwww.. In my opinion Win ME is equal to Windows 95.. Poor memory management too crashable..
As for the Win XP being 100 more than Win2k... I believe the people will know that since they buy P4 they will get their maximum support with Windows XP so what are they going to do .. Get theirs money worth or use a 32bit OS?
If you are a student academic version is now out for cheap!

First al all: thanks for the input guys!
I think i'll go for the dual boot win2k / 98
About the free 2k: well to clear things out, I am NOT reffering to warez!!!
It's just some kind of multi-user licence from the university I work for. I'm not sure how this use at home exactly is implemented, but they asured me it's perfectly legal. Fact is that I use my own PC a lot for my work.
cheers
