Well, this should probably be in the AMD CPU section... but we'll let the mods worry about that.

Well, the P4 is going to be better in the graphics area. However, the Athlon may or may not be better in everything else. The Athlon XP beats the P4 in benchmarks, but the Athlon is behind the P4 in many areas, IMHO (the Athlon is based on a 3 year old core, etc...). I'd get an Asus A7V266E with the Athlon XP 1800+ or 1900+. Not sure what the Abit equivalent to the A7V266E is, but it would also probably be worth looking into. The Athlon XP has proven so far to be very good in the ocing area, I believe Mr. B could give you some insight there (and some more good recomendations on mobos and procs).

If you can swing the cash, why not run a second system? One Intel, one AMD?

I'd change anyday and it IS WAY CHEAPER than your P4 ..

I'd get the

EPoX 8kha+
XP 1600+
ddr 2700..

And you'll have some left over cash to put in your pocket!

Well, no matter what, considering your using DIMMs for your P4, any Athlon XP would run faster. I would either reccomend upgrading to an Athlon XP, or using an Intel i850 motherboard, such as: PGA423- Asus P4T , mPGA478- Asus P4T-E

Why an intel board ? They can't overclock..

I would recommend Asus P4T-B
RDRam support.. really good too.

Actually, Intel chipsets can overclock nicely. It's the actual mobos Intel manufacturers themselves that can't overclock. I'm using an SA6-R in my second rig and that runs on the Intel i815EP chipset.

3 years old ? wasn't the original Athlon put on the market after the Coppermine ? And the coppermine isn't 3 years old (or I have an "antique" lol P3 !), at least not from what I know

Well, my knowledge of AMD is limited, I'll admit, but I thought the K7 core was based to go up against the P3 which was gaining higher ground in the Mhz battle than the K6-3 cores... and P3 didn't start out with Coppermine cores, they started out with Katmai cores. I know it's at least 2 years old, and soon be pushing three, if it's not there.

BTW: That's a nice avatar you have there...

ya, you're right, the Athlon is almost 3 years old : from this page, http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/AboutAMD/0,,51_52_533,00.html,

A little flashback : "1999--AMD introduces AMD Athlon processor, the world's first seventh-generation processor for Microsoft Windows® computing."

For the avatar, the prestige goes to R0BB23 :)

3 years is an exaggeration, the Athlons i believe came out right before the Cumines.....but after the Katmais, but are still blazing fast, but so were the PIIIs in fact had intel been able to get the PIII cores at these clock speeds AMD would have no chance whatsoever (unless they could do the same with the Athlons).....yeah, the DDr on the Athlons really help...
