Don't have anything off the top of my head, but it would be nice to have a pic of Arecibo. Or maybe the VLA.

Come on boys and gals.....If you want the stickers before 'Xmas (wouldn't it be cool that if you give away a computer it has a sticker promoting this great site and this greater team). The following characteristic need to be fullfited by any of the logos:
1.-1"x1"
2.-200 or 400 dpi (good for any industrial size printer)
3.-4 or less colors
About the design, anything goes.....I would suggest that all must be posted in here. If more than 5, I would like to see which are 5 coolest and then post a poll in here.....
Any comments?

Do you mean you don't have a nice art package. If so you can try this out for 30 days, it's called Paintshop Pro. If you don't think your artwork is very good, you can practice for 29 days, and create your masterpiece on the 30th :D http://www.jasc.com/download_4.asp?
Yes, please note that currently this Design contest does not have a deadline. So take your time with it, you would be suprised at what you could learn in thirty day's.
Check out these sites for a few tips, feel free to add any folks!

At last someone getting the idea clear, good job ymNA.
I shall add that a sticker with a higly detailed photo is not so good, because when you print it with lower resolutions you get a blurry image. Something more abstract and with few colors might not be so flashy here at the website but when you look at the sticker.....
To all the other thanks for all your effords.
I wish we can se more designs to make a little contest.
I will try and whip something up for you as well Mictlan.

Quick question... You said limit it to 4 colors right? Well, for those highly detailed pics, they have WAY more than 4 colors, so are they out of the picture for the stickers? I was just thinking about this last night when I found an awesome galaxy picture. Reduced to 4 colors in IrfanView, and it was beyond icky. I hope that we don't have to have only 4 diffrent colors in the whole picture...
JigPu
If 4 colors is the limit, then there is no limit i think cuz CMYK is 4 colors and can produce ton of colors.

Is anyone of you familiar with a printing press?
The way a printing press works is with cilinders and negatives. You produce a negative of the image you are going to print, you pass a cilinder that has the ink and then put the negative over the paper. Then you repeat it with all the colors you are going to use.
I agree with you ymNA, with just 4 colors you can produce lots of shades, but remember the other limitation: printing it with low resolutions (200 to 400 dpi).
Remeber the fancier you make the logo, the more expensive it will be to produce the stickers.
OK... 4 colors, but many shades. I think I understand... So dithering down to 256 color should be no problem then, right? Or could I keep it at however many colors it uses, and then the printer will only print x number of those individual colors (and just substitute them with close colors...).
Nevermind... It's confusing to me even! :) Guess I'll just throw some together, and see what I come up with!
BTW: ymNA has my favorite logo!!

Being a printer for almost five years I would have to say yes, printed on offset, flexo, and also done some screen printing.
J
i dont know if this is any better the then first 2 pics i made for this but heres another try
OK, here's what I have... (I figured for 400dpi, and 1"x1", it would be 200x200 pixels...)

JigPu Hey that is cool - although I don't know enough about printing to say whether or not it would reproduce well under the given constraints. Almost surely wouldn't be able to read the small print, but the image and large text are cool.

At 100x100 (@1024x768), it's almost exactly 1", and the text is still readable IMO, but not with a quick glance. But who knows what printing it will do to the text! Let's see what I can whip up again. :D
JigPu
hmm if that will equal out to 1 inch i have been makeing mine way to small lol. well if i do make another one at least i know now

I just noticed Jigpu's avatar in another thread and i'd like to say that if it were posible to print that one up as the logo it is the most attractive logo i've seen posted so far.
Maybe we have enough for a vote?
Why not let it run out for 30 day's and see what the results we have are ? Just my two cents gives us options.
J
JigPu....your avatar is sweet! :)

i agree. that also would give some of us (like lazy me :D ) some more time.......
Let's here it for the lazy people!! (like me!)
Well.... I have rethought my thinking, and would really like somebody else's opinion on this. 400dpi (1"x1") would be 400x400. Only reason I think this is that it isn't dots per square inch, and if it were, it would be a 20x20 pixel image.
My brain hurts.... And I gotta go to school...
At least I get to watch Deat Poets Society first period...:)

no, if u using Photoshop to open a new document. try to set the setting as --- width=1", height=1", dpi(or somthing like that)=400. then u'll see u'll have a image is 400pixel x 400 pixel. it WILL look more than a square inch on the screen b/c the screen u r looking at in roughly 'bout 72dpi!! and that's why it WILL look bigger than real size. however, as long as u have a image is 400x400pixels, it WILL be fine when u go through printing process. 'cos when u print it, setting the printer at 400dot/inch^2, it WILL come out in 1"x1" size.
hope this would clear for anyone who r intending to make the team logo.
Yeah.... I had to figure all that out in Paint of all horible learning tools! Guess I get my logo at 200dpi, or resize to 400x400...
Hopefully annother one coming up!!
