View Full Version : Faulty PSU?

I recently ordered a new Sonata II case w/ the Smartpower 2.0 450W PSU. I've noticed that my rails are very low when I boot up the computer (3.18, 4.73, 12.4 for the big 3). Before this I was using a Fortron 350W that worked fine, so I quite sure it's not due to lack of power.

My system specs:
Epox 8RDA+ mobo, rev 1.0
AthlonXP 2500+ at stock speed
1GB PC3200 RAM, stock speed
250GB HD
Radeon 9800pro 128MB, stock speed
2 120mm case fans + 1 80mm CPU fan
DVD-ROM drive
using onboard sound and LAN

So far I haven't had any crashes, but I haven't tried running any demanding apps yet. Should I RMA the PSU or is there anything I can do to correct this?

Unfortunately, your system is +5v dependent, whereas the SmartPower 2.0 is designed more towards +12v loads.

There's nothing "wrong" with your PSU, but it just isn't good at driving the types of loads you are asking of it.

Is that digital multimeter verified or software voltage readings?

Thanks for the info. I think I may go back to using the Fortron.

The readings are from software/firmware voltage readings (during POST when it displays CPU freq, RAM, IDE drives, etc).

BIOS readings are pretty inaccurate. Unless you use a digital multimeter, you're basically guessing at how accurate the numbers you see are.
