View Full Version : over clocking a AMD k62 Im a newbe please help!
Hi there I'm new to over clocking and would like to try it out.
1. I have a 300 mhz cpu a award mobo ( I know you probably need more info than that, please advise how)and running win me.
I like to know if I can speed up the processor, and how fast if possible and to be relatively stable.
I know it a lot to ask! Can someone please help me out?
Thanks
Al
First,
WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!
One thing you will need to know is K-6 CPUs hate
voltage!!! Do not up the volts unless you have to/and an
extra CPU to learn from your mistake!
Simply UP the multiplyer or FSB through the jumpers on the
mobo and...well you are overclocked! Keep going up untill
you reach instability. DO NOT MESS WITH THE VOLTS
Do not listen to the 15% volts rule, It is incorrect with K-6
CPUs. Jumping it as much as 4% can damage the CPUs - Not
instantly but in about 10-100 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BUT BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING...
Locate the Clear CMOS jumper, it is very important incase
you do something in the bios that causes the system to not
post. -Mainly in newer boards
You may also find settings in the bios that can cause you
to reach higher oc-ability, just play with the settings and
if the computer fails to post just use the clear CMOS jumper.
Do not leave the Clear CMOS jumper in the clear position while
booting - this will damage the BIOS.
A 300 i used to have one of those. My 300 wasn't a CXT core but it did 350 with a P3 heatsink and Vcore of 2.3 i don't really remember the vcore. U can get 333 to 350 easy with a CXT core chip i suggest trying 350 and if it's stable stick with it. I agree with Yman don't up the voltage too high.
Good luck with the oc- K6-2s are hard to get much out of: I had 2 450s- 1 went to 500 and the other 550 but that was it. I did have to increase volts, but don't go much.
You probably won't get too much out of that chip so don't let it get you down!
Have fun!
