Haha, now you might have a reason for SMD (sudden Maxtor Death). Good luck and I hope all goes good for you.

Damn plexy wont fit... Need to find a cover to mod to fit ontop it... the head sticks up to far.. oh well... The drive is back togther with 0 dust inside.. Thanks to a humid bathroom and ziplock bag :)

3 seconds or not, if a single spec of dust get's in say good by to your drive.

No one i have read of has succesfully gotten a drive over 20g to last after doing a plexi mod to them.

Also, ziplocl bags probably have some small particles in it from the production process..

really unless you have a clean room, i think the chances of succesfully doing this and have it work for an extended time are slim.

I think its ok... I mean ive seen many people do it now.. with success.
I need a extra cover so i can mod it and install that.

i took a shower yesterday, looked at the mirror and saw all of the dust particles from the air attached to it via condensation....
makeshift clean room:

close all windows and doors, put a towel under the door to ensure that no air enters, fill bathtub with HOT water....presto chango! makeshift clean room...anybody know anything about what i just said? is this really an effective cleanroom? would the higher concentration of water molecules in the air perhaps condense on the hard disk? that might be a problem...probablly not since the concentration wouldnt be that high but better safe than sorry

edit: i would rather open up a hard drive in a clean...erhm cleaner...room than in an open regular room

Yes, that is what is recommended, but let the for settle so you dont get moisture in the drive :)

add some led's!

I've heard of the head/clearance problem, there's four things you can do:
1) put a spacer (really thick washer?) by the screw-holes so that the cover closes a little higher than before, then seal the resulting gap between the top and bottom covers
2) install the window on top of the cover instead of under, might be difficult at this point
3) figure out the swing path of the head, machine a grove for it
4) use something thinner, polycarbonate comes in a whole range of thicknesses, down to polycarbonate films -- if you use the really thin stuff, you'll want to take care that there isn't any flexion that'll show and ruin the visuals.

Im going to find a dead one and mod the cover so I can just make the switch.

Pull the magnets out of it. Just be careful, you will get a blood blister if your finger gets in between them. Might as well have fun with it. :D
