View Full Version : Random resets and instability from an XP?

I just got a new XP 1600+ (funny, it defautls to 1.4 gHz) that I thought would make my system more stable and cooler. At first it lowered my temps by about 10°C and gave me little trouble.
I guess the honeymoon's over now. The temps are back to about 51°C (love that mini copper orb  ) and I've been getting rnadom resets and slowdowns at the rate of about 4-6 per day. I thought it might be the heat (which should be too low to cause that sort of thing) and I reapplied some thermal goop. As I was booting up, however, it reset again.
It doesn't seem to reset when I go away and let it fold proteins, but whenever I'm on it, I live in fear of a random reset.

I forgot to mention that I've got an A7M266 mobo and 2*256 MB PC2100 Crucial RAM. I think that's all that's relevant.

You wouldn't be using a GF3, would you ??

Are you running it at 1.6 or at the default?

I'm running at the default voltage. Should I try 1.6?
No GF3 here.

I think he means 1.6 Ghz, the XP 1600+ has a real clock speed of 1.4Ghz or so, so if you're running it at 1.6Ghz, u just overclocked it to a 1900+, so obviously that could be your problem.

actually the new xp's dont run at the number they are described by, the 1800 only runs at 1.5ghz if im not mistaken. they put the bigger number out front because its "supposed" seem to run that fast.

taken straight from AMD:

Q: What do the 1900+, 1800+, 1700+, 1600+, and 1500+ numbers mean?

A: These are model numbers. AMD identifies the AMD Athlon XP processor using model numbers, as opposed to megahertz, such as 1900+, 1800+, 1700+, 1600+ and 1500+ versions. Model numbers are designed to communicate the relative application performance among the various AMD Athlon XP processors, as well as communicate the architectural superiority over existing AMD Athlon processors. The AMD Athlon XP processor 1900+ will outperform an Intel PentiumŪ 4 processor operating at 1.9GHz on a broad array of end-user applications.

AMD Athlon XP processor 1900+ operates at a frequency of 1.60GHz.
AMD Athlon XP processor 1800+ operates at a frequency of 1.533GHz.
AMD Athlon XP processor 1700+ operates at a frequency of 1.47GHz.
AMD Athlon XP processor 1600+ operates at a frequency of 1.40GHz.
AMD Athlon XP processor 1500+ operates at a frequency of 1.33GHz.

I should have mentioned that I know the PR ratings and find them a bit deceptive, but that's not very important
It's not OCed any since I haven't gotten any unlocking stuff.
Anyway, the random resets have caused another problem (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46019).
