I need a little help. I just got my older computer (667 celly) to work on a proxy through my LAN sharing the same 56k connection as my new one. So now i wanna get it told fold under the same name as I am already using, to help up my folding capacity. What do I do? I have tryed by myself and I got it to run. It will start the program (the visual one, but I don't use the screensaver) and download a new protien. But it never gets any work done at all. Just sits there. The protien pictures change, but no progress.

Did you put the same name & team that you use for your
main name? Logical on my end

I once had a prob & it looked like it sat there but after a long
while it jumped like from 0/1000 to 728/1000!
Let it be and see what happens i it still doent help...post a reply

I might double check the names are the same and everything, but I'm pretty sure they are the same. And even Foldmonitor is saying that nothing is happening.

What version of folding @ home are you using?
Have you tried a reinstall of it?

I am using I belive 2.11 Beta - works great,
I think they have a 2.12 out now too
- I will have to download it :D

The names are the same, and I'm using 2.12. If it is actually showing the different protiens, doesn't that means it's working? Or is that just some jpgs. being flashed at the screen?

O yea, and thanks for the welcome! Right now I'm having fun climbing from the bottom of the Folding Stat list. :)

How about downgrading?
Unistall the program and them downgrade to an older version 2 release.

MMarcDMB

Could i have some linkage to older stuff, the actual Stamford site only has 2.12 from what I can find. Kinda strange trying to downgrade something. :)

There was a thread here about using a proxy to connect and some problems . I think that there may also be a problem with XP and sending in WU's. Not 100% on that. Read something in the [H]ardforum or Ars DC forum before work this morning. Can't remember which but it may be useful here. I'll see if I can find it. No guarantees though.

I understand now, I'll see what I can do in my High School, See if I can get the computers over there to run this program, but I'll have to figure out how to get around their firewall...

By the way it says that the program only uses left cycles on your system, well **** its using 100% of my system well iam not complaining i set it to High access times so it gave more juice to it...

How many can I run @ a time? I'am doing the Villin right now...

Hey Genoide,
Folding will use 100% of your computer when nothing else is running but soon as you start running programs, playing games etc. it will only use the resources that are not being utilized. It totally runs in the background and doesn't affect your performance any. Good luck at getting the Computers at your highschool to run the program. Might I suggest you contact the science teacher/teachers and show them what good your school could be doing in this research. IF you have them on your side it may be bit easier to get folding on the computers-just make sure you have them sign up under our team:p

Cheers

LOL well I'd have to know alot more about Folding tho and its background, but you got a point, I might by my junior year or so... I'll still try to have them running this program if possible.

Welcome to the team. :)
You can run several at a time but you really only need to run one instance of the client on a single CPU machine.
When you said you set it to 'High' I hope you didn't mean the priority. That can seriously affect the way your system runs because it will cause everything else that is running to wait for the client to give up cycles. The default is idle. It can be set anywhere from idle to below normal and still get over 90% of the total CPU time. That way the folding client will give up CPU cycles much more easily to other programs that are running.

please back to my topic :P, I'm running Windows 98 on both. The proxy may be a problem, but it did download work to do. So I'm confused.

Do you have a FIREWALL,
or PORT BLOCKING?

Have you checked the fahlog in the Folding@Home directory to see what it says? ie...

Finished frame 1
finished frame 2
finished frame 3 and so on?
I'm not sure if the display always shows the frame count correctly. I've heard others say that it won't even update frame count for almost the whole time the client works on one protein.

Also they credit these proteins based on the performance of a 400 MHz Celeron and 2 points is supposed to take two days, which means that it can sit there for a while before doing even one frame. I am timing my 1G PIII now to see how long it takes per frame.

<edit>OK. It took a little more than 10 minutes to complete a frame with a 1G PIII. </edit>

On my P3 the standard is about 9mins a frame for villin!

Genoide

I do 4 minutes EXACT for frame.

MMarcDMB
11-14-01, 04:43 PM
No, there is nothing being finished in the log, it just starts the tinker program and sits there. I have no firewall or port blocking, but I am running a proxy. This 667, is hooked up to my network and getting internet acess from my 1.4 which folds fine. O yea, and I have waited wel over 15 mins.

I do not know much about this proxy thing but
have you configured it correctly?

If you right-click on the "red gear" and select configure...
Go to the bottom of the menu that opens,
select/do the following,

1) Put a check in USE A PROXY SERVER

2) Were it says "Proxy server address" type the IP
of the Proxy server.
To find the IP of the proxy server, go to the server itself
and click start> Run> and in there type WINIPCFG
Were it says IP address that is the number you want.

3) Were it says "Port" type in an open port try 80,81,1001, or 10002

Tell us if this works,
or if you need me to take you step-by-step, or clerify.

Yea I got all that set up, the only difference is that I am using port 6588 (it's what AnalogX, my proxy prog. uses for http).

MMarcDMB
11-14-01, 05:11 PM
Ok, I set up socks5 and ftp and such too and I think I finally got it to work. But, damn that took a long time. .01% of 1 frame takes about a min. That's a loonngg time to finish one frame. Anybody know of this problem on 667 cellys?

YMAN
11-14-01, 05:15 PM
One-Hundreth of a frame a minute?
Did I hear correct?
Maybe a 75Mhz - But a 667?

Try - Re-Installing 2.11 (The one I sent)

MMarcDMB
11-14-01, 05:16 PM
Yep, my head hurts too.

YMAN
11-14-01, 05:19 PM
Take Note of the time,
tell us how long it takes to compete 1 WU.
Make sure the WU has been sent correctly.

*Do not estimate - we need EXACT!

MMarcDMB
11-14-01, 05:25 PM
Hey, you must be joking. I getting po'ed, it hasn't changed frames in over 20 mins, and the foldmonitor says it done with 0.5% of a frame. (ie. .005) within these last 20 mins.

YMAN
11-14-01, 05:29 PM
...HEHEHE,
Well maybe not a 75 but still thats a bit tooo slow app. 40Min
PER FRAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MMarcDMB
11-14-01, 05:32 PM
ooo. i just hit 2, that took a looonnnggg time. this is deffinatly not how a 667 should be working.
