i am builinf a new pc/workstation. I am going to use photoshop, 3d max, and maya , and i will be gaming and surfing the net. I have like 500 $ left over so will these apps benefit from 4 gb
Probably not. IMO, The only reason to get 4GB right now for a home PC is to show off.

If using Windows XP (Home or Pro), you will only get to utilize roughly 3.25GBs of memory. For whatever reason, Microsoft decided to hard code a limitation in that area (although it does seem to be slightly different from machine to machine).
I would say go with 3GBs. 2 1GB modules and 2 512MB modules so as to keep dual channel functionality. Maya and 3DS Max can be very memory intensive but not much beyond the 2GB range. Same with Photoshop.
I agree, anything more than 2 gigs just seems to give you bragging rights, not for performance, only for spending the money.
Filling up all four slots usually causes you to drop back to 2T on the Command Rate.
