I am ready to install my first ATI card an x1800xt and I am in need of some help. With Nvidia, I would instal the forceware drivers and Rivatuner for OCing...

When I go to ATI's site, they list three downloads:
Microsoft .NET Framework
Catalyst Control Center Package
AVIVO Video Converter Engine

Do I need all of these? What is the best program for overclocking?
Any tips for a new ATI man are appreciated

Do not download the entire CCC package. CCC is bloated and has been shown to actually lower gaming performance somewhat due to its interaction with Net.Framework.

Here is what you need to do and you can trust me because I have been doing this for a long time so I know what works best.

Download and install Only the Display Driver and the WDM driver.
If you want to overclock use the 6.3's because the 6.5's are having trouble with ATI TOOL overclocking utility which I will tell you about.

Do it in this order:
Download and install 6.3 display driver-Reboot
Download and install 6.3 WDM driver-Reboot
Download and install ATI TRAY TOOLS and make sure to disable overclocking during installation! You will use a diff tool for that! TOOLS-http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/
Download and install ATI TOOL for overclocking-http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/259

Could you please elaborate? I may just flash to x1800xt PE and call it a day.

There is no X1800XT PE that I am aware of. Your best bet is overclocking. As for the incompatibility of the 6.5's what I am reffering to is the fact that your card will sometimes loose its applied overclock while gameing. Its not sticking for some reason. Mainly it happens when a video file plays and if your playing a game that uses video then your screwed.

Ya thats definatly one thing to do. I'd double check I think even using the X1800XTPE bios increases the 3D voltage on the card so you might run slightly higher temps. Just keep that in mind, but also you might beable to OC it that much more in CCC if you'd like to and not touch ATITool or any other program.

I know I've been thinking of using CCC to do my OCing since I'm not increasing my voltages (actually lowered my core voltage to 1.4V in 3D) but not 100% sure.

Is there even such a thing as a X1800XT PE:shrug: If so then I sure cannot find any info on one that was ever actually released.

Yes it was released. Rare but its out there, only difference from what I remember was slightly higher 3D voltage, and a slightly higher clock on both core and memory. Something that could easily be achived with a X1800XT usually on stock volts.

Hmm, cant seem to find any for sale on Newegg or anywhere else for that matter. It must be discontinued then.
