I just bought a laptop from HP with 512mb RAM. I'm going to be using the computer for some gaming and some schoolwork. Is there any disadvantage to adding a 1024mb RAM stick? Something about different sized RAM(cause the computer has two slots)

If it supports dual channel it won't work as dual channel, but will work. Should be just fine though, and if anything you can always take out the 512MB stick and just use 1GB.

A few things to check carefully though would be how much RAM total is supported, and how large of a stick it will recognize. You should be good on both counts though.

Sometimes you will run into complications when it is not the same exact brand. I would suggest just putting 2 1gb stick in there for a totoal of 2gb, and running under Dual Channel

The laptop will support at least 2 GB RAM because thats the most you can buy it with (2 x 1024 Mb), so I am indeed good on both counts. Thanks.

almost any recent hp can take 2x1gb. one thing to check is what came in it- just because the system came with 512 does not mean its 1x512. verry commonly its 2x256 still- not only is it cheaper for HP but it provides dual channel performance out of the box.

personally i'd just go ahead and see what it has- if its 1x512, just grab another 512, but if your heartset on more than a gig get a 1 gig and grab another later on down the road to replace whats in there. definately want matched ram :)

You shouldn't have any problems running memory of different capacities. But like Como says make sure you actually do have an open slot in the system.

Yeah, I ordered it specifically with 1x512 with intent to upgrade.

Also, any RAM that I do get...
Is there a disparity in quality from brand to brand? Or is all laptop RAM created equal (aside from the obvious memory difference)? And will using different brands/ qualities mess up the lappy?

different brands are ok, just get name brand. normally im not a name brand sucker, but do yourself a favor- go with a name you've heard of. i believe i got crucial, its probably the only component that i chose right the first time i replaced it.
