View Full Version : 1.2 Celeron + new mobo? or a 866Mhz PIII? pls help me to choose
Hi,
A PIII 866Mhz can stick in my existing mobo without a questoin. On the other hand if I go for the new 1.2G Celeron I had to replace my mobo as well.
What should I do? any comments?

well the 1.2 will overclock better but the way i look at it the 1.2 will just be a little better [a upgrade yes but not a huge jump]then the p3 so to me its an issue of bandwidth if your happy with or have good bandwidth i would go with the p3 and save a few bucks but if your looking for an improvement in bandwidth and your set on a 1.2 then go for it.
What motherboard do you have now Philip?
My mobo is a FIC FS39 (815EP, microATX). Currently it has got a Celeron 800 OC to 976 on it. Reason for considering an upgrade is because price of the PIII 866 has dropped to a more affortable level for me. I'm hoping that the extra 128K cache and higher memory bandwidth (133Mhz) could improve system performance.
I really think that a fast CPU needed fast memory to match with or else it would be a waste of the CPU. That's why the extra cache and 133Mhz memory clock can help.

yes but with good cooling the celly 1.2 shouldnt have any trouble getting to 133fsb at which point it whoop any PIII (1560mhz)....it also has 256cache like the pIIs....

yes.. while any P3 with 140mhz FSB and Up i.e. 150fsb will whoop T-Celeron 1.2Ghz@ as high as 1.6Ghz+ with SDRAM support while any BX board with P3@ 140mhz FSB whoop T-Celerie 1.2@ 1.7Ghz.
Even at 1.8Ghz T-Celery, my RAM throughput perfomance still outperforms SDRAM 1.8Ghz T-Celerie. ;)

yes, but ram performance really doesnt matter all that much, i would rather have a 1.6celly than a 1.1 PIII ill take the celly in any game/benchmark except for memory bandwith, what youre saying is like saying a P4 is faster than an Ahtlon because RDRAM has more bandwith....

admit the truth...
RAM throughput is meant high FSB related memory performance, thus increasing the entire AGP & PCI components' bus speed. RAM throughput comes very crucial. The gaming performance, running SETI, and the rest of applications. And what you are saying about the P4's RDRAM having higher memory bandwidth over an Athlon is ilrelevant to what I was saying. Where is Phil.. He's good at explaining this.

sure, but id still take a 1.6 celly any day over a 1.1 PIII, the power is the same, plus its more fun to oc....:)....

Once you get the 1.2 T-Celery oc'ed to 133fsb with your GF2 Pro, run the Quake3A timedemo 001 version 1.17 if you have it. Set the the game's graphics option to all default (don't change anything) except set the resolution to 1024x768x16 and compare that with my 1000E@ 1410 with lesser performance GF2 GTS 32mb I have. I would like to see yours.. :)
No matter how fast a CPU is, it will become idle if the memory I/O cannot catch up with it. I mean, if memory I/O is not fast enough, the CPU will have NOTHING to process after finishing the small amount of data sent to it, and it will become idle, or enter sleep mode. An idled 1.6G Celeron would not be any better than an idled 1G PIII, because the memory has became a bottleneck in this case.
My 2 cents.
Back to my original question, how likely the 1.2G Celeron can reach 133Mhz?

with some hihg quality ram at cas2 at 133 should be enough bandwith for the celly, they dont use that much bandwith....

sure, the only problem is that i got this for my dad on his bday and it will go in his comp, so ill have to wait a coupla weeks till he doesnt need it........till then i could bench it with his inherited Rage Fury Pro, heres the deal so far:
(1024x768x32, all settings maxed)
Dad's PIII450-20fps in Unreal Tourney
My PIII 600@840-40fps in Unreal Tourney, im hoping the performance will follow this trend :)......
Also i never doubted that i would probly get whooped by your PIII1460 (nice job btw), but i said i would beat a PIII 866 no matter how amazing an OC.....once i get free time with his comp i will take up the challenge, looks like ill have to redownload QIII Demo :(.......anywayz, i cant wait, we have a beautiful BD133U and a shiny VolcanoII, and a high quality 60GXP just waiting to be messed with....but no Celly yet ....too bad newegg wasnt selling the 1.2......

no but he did set up a tight network so me and my friends can play against each other (he thinks unreal is too bloody, shoot you should seen my moms reaction when she saw me play max Payne ;) )...yeah so i have unreal on his comp for competition between my friends.....and my friends complained that i always had an advantage (20fps more really does enhance your skill :D ), but its cool because hes letting me oc the snot outta it so he can get a sweet comp, and he likes the fact that i like computers....

BTW, Yodums, no we were just talking and cheering up. You mentioned about the price difference between the P3 and T-Celery... don't worry. I didn't say that to upset you or anything. If you like 1.2 T-Celery, great! get one and enjoy.. :) I'm not stopping anyone to get one and I am not trying to put down T-Celery in the first place. You can tell by my replies here. There's no reason to bash its own Intel chips. Buying the type of CPU or whatever is personal preference.. so I'm not stopping you or anybody. It's all up to u guys. :)
Funnyperson,
You have cool Dad.. too bad the T-Celery 1.2 isn't yours.. since you are going to build it for him, he ought to buy another one for you! cauze that's no fun. and yes, T-Celery is an awesome overclocker. I respect that and wish you get one! Are u going to get one for yourself? :) **Edit** oops.. it's for your dad's birthday, nevermind.. sorry.
