switching CPU/mobo without reformatting

It's not that you HAVE to reformat between every hardware change, it's just that XP sometimes doesn't like it.

Especially in your case, I think your current install will go bonkers with a platform change...

You can probably repair your install with the CD after you've installed new parts.
 
AMD64 to P4 no problem you can uninstall the system drivers.

Intel to AMD64 no go can not unistall the Intel drivers like Nvidia,Via, SIS, etc.

Sorry need a reformat to get that to work right.

nvidia? as in Nforce? the new amd64 board uses a nforce4 chipset.
 
Seinken answered your original question... was there something else you needed to know? Like he suggested, if XP doesn't boot completely after the hardware change then try a repair install. If a repair install doesn't work, then obviously you'll need to perform a fresh install... which is what I'd recommend doing anyway, especially after a major platform change.
