right click causes explorer to crash

any time i right click on an open area my explorer crashes, it doesnt happen when i right click a folder or file. :-/ any ideas? this is the info in the temp txt file

i found out why this only worked once - it's because i closed control panel after i opened the folder view option and then went to file types. same thing happens if i open it using a folder. it only crashes if the folder is still open when i go to file types

i think its something in the create new file section when you right click. if there was only a way to look at whats there without actually rightclicking, maybe a program that lets u add or edit entries to that section or even the registry?

Continuing a thread with the same issue helps with background on the issue and what was attempted to fix it. I have no clue what you did to try to fix it or how long you been working on fixing it. Without redduc900 mentioning this has been going on for sometime. I would of not known.

It makes it hader for me to try and help. Now I got to go backwards in time and read your other thread. If I can find it. I hope you see this reasoning. Could you link in the first post and a little background of what is going on? :D

As to why I asked, and to why it's always a good idea to continue with a thread you may have started on the same topic... Enablingwolf hit the nail on the head with his response. If you still can't access the right click options menu in its' entirety even in Safe Mode, check in the registry under the following two keys...

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT | * | OpenWithList
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT | * | shellex | ContextMenuHandlers

... and either post the contents of of the keys, or take pics with each of the two keys highlighted so we can see the contents in the RH pane of the editor.

maybe i'm wrong but aren't these entries for when you right click on a file, because explorer only crashes when i right click directly inside a folder or desktop without clicking on a file. if that makes sense

Yeah you're right... my mistake, I don't know what I was thinking. Open Display Properties | "Appearance" tab | "Effects" button. In the Effects dialog box, try clearing the "Use the following transition effect for menus and tooltips" check box.

if i right click it'll take about 3 or 4 seconds before it crashes explorer, but if i right click and go to new it crashes instantly, something is messed up in there so it can't display what's there, at least thats my theory

theres a like a memory dump and the list is long but you cant highlight and copy and when i tried to open the dump in hex editor it said used by another application and when i click close, the dump disappears.

anyways i just discovered something i killed explorer in the processes then hit new task and right click worked. now i have no idea whats going on :confused:

Just a quick question... are you running WindowBlinds with the Aero theme? And I don't think you ever mentioned whether you had SP2 installed or not. Also, have you checked yet to see if Explorer crashes in Safe Mode?

no windows blinds, installed a theme pack 2 days ago so thats not the problem since the problem was there a while ago. I have sp2 installed, and i can't go to safe mode since the vista boot crap taking over the boot.ini. nothing happens when i hit F8

My video driver had been corrupted somehow which caused Explorer.exe to hang when doing things like right-clicking on the desktop. When I uninstalled and reinstalled the video driver, the problem disappeared.

yes finally its fixed after months of tourment. a friend of mine (also a member here The_man27) recommended using shellview to indentify the problem. http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html

so i disabled everything that wasn't from microsoft, with no luck then all the context handlers, still no luck and then all icon handlers and it finally worked. so the i started enabling the one by one so i could find out which one was causing the problem. the weird thing is that i came down to 1 item and then enabled that one too to see if it was that one and it still worked. so i have no idea what was wrong with it, so all i did was disable and then enable bunch of items in the program.

lol i ran out of ideas too and finally gave in and did a fresh install. thanks for your help and effort to try and solve this problemi guess we'll never know if that would have fixed the problem or not.
