Hey, I haven't done that, but I my online friend have used 38 fans in his machine.
Why ? He overclocked everything ! And I mean everything. He told me it was the CPU, the video card, other things. I don't know where he put them. I haven't talked to him in a while, but next time I meet him I'll need to ask him how and where he put them.

Me ? Hey, I only have 8 fans :)

does 8 include your power supply fans, case fans, card fan, chipsets fans, and the hsf?

It would seem that 38 fans is overkill. Is this chap pulling your leg? If not, a re-think of his cooling setup is in order. And overdue.

Maybe he replaced his case sidepanels with fans... That would explain the humongous amount of fans.

I've had 12 fans in my case at best...

>does 8 include your power supply fans, case fans, card fan, chipsets fans, and the hsf?
4 case fans, 1 video card fan, 2 CPU fans, 1 PSU fan = 8 fans
I don't think I have chipset fans..

>It would seem that 38 fans is overkill. Is this chap pulling your leg?
he might be, but I don't think so. He's pretty crazy like that. .

>Maybe he replaced his case sidepanels with fans
Yes, I think that's what he did.
I think he did the whole thing to show off to his friends. He has LAN parties and he's the 'computer guy' in his city.
Last I heard of him, he took the fans off.

hmm lets see here,

4 chassis fans, 1 psu, 1 cpu, 1 vid card, 3 hd fans= 10 fans

and believe me my comp sounds like it getting ready to take off.

DennisMV,
WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!

I think 38 fans is overkill!
Not to mention the noise!!!

That person must get good temps though.

I would NEVER use 38 fans in my comps,
famous last words. :p
Do any of you have over 20 fans?

thats gotta put a huge load on any psu

Ive had up to 12 fans on a 250watt AT psu and that gave it a big load

I think RedneckTech has 27 or so... It's really not all that hard to do... 4 Hard drive cooling bays with (4) 40mm fans each gets you to 16 really fast, then case fans, psu fans, chipset fans, CPU fans, it wouldn't be THAT hard to put 38 fans into a big enough case. I've got a server around the corner that has umm... hmmm I think about 40 fans. 4 120s up front, 20 40s cooling the 5 hard drives, 8 60s cooling the 4 processors, then 4 120s and 2 92s in the back, and two 80s in the PSUs... Yup, 40 Fans, and that's before any modding. heheheh... They haven't let me do that yet, somehow they don't think the words 'Xeon Server' and 'Holesaw' go in the same sentence for some reason... It does however, already have two windows, one on each side of the case, and it came like that from the factory. I just wish it would die or something so I could get the case... prolly weighs about 150lbs empty though... hehe
Peace

I remember seeing a pic of case side entirely made out of fans!!

That was at the alternative modding section somewhere...

Wouldn't you end up with solder dripping down the inside of your case with that kinda loading

That many fans would even bring the ambient temperature down.

You would have to wear ear defenders to stop the noise deafening you, and to keep your ears warm

38 fans...............mmmmmmmm..................:D

i can see my mid tower case haveing 8 - 10 fans max , 6 now , and its loud

Crazy Jayhawk

I have 17 fans. Since I can regulate the voltage going to them, the system isn't all that loud. Here's the breakdown.

120mm: 3. Two intakes, one exhaust.
92mm: 2. One intake, one cooling hard drives.
80mm: 5. One intake, two exhaust, one PSU fan, one cooling hard drives.
70mm: 1. One CPU fan. (actually, it's an oddly shaped 60mm fan. It has 70mm blades and 60mm bolt holes.)
60mm: 2. Two exhaust.
50mm: 2. One GPU cooler, one voltage regulator cooler.
40mm: 1. One Northbridge cooler.
30mm: 1. One inside the CD burner.

I have 9 fans and many of my friends think that's excessive.

when I finally get around to finishing my setup I will have 6, 2 120, 1 60 or 80 (depends on how my water tubes fit),2 psu fans, 1 40 on vid card

I may stick another one or two in there just for good measure though

still with water cooling I will not need 38 fans:D

Did you check the fuse?
Any cheap parts in the PS burnt/ya can find them at Radio Shack
- You dont get much out of K6-CPUs

Speaking of burned up PSUs, I had a cheap 120mm (not sunon, boy did I learn) and as soon as I hit the power switch it smoked badly and melted the four point connector. Replaced this, and still nothing, killed my PSU right there.

Been using Sunon 120s, great and dependable.....just DONT inadvertenly stick your hand in one like I did. Thats why grille gaurds are recommended....

I know what you mean about finger guards
I was very lucky though my high powered panaflos are on a baybus and I only lost a shaving of skin off my index finger

I am glad I am going with water rather than a big delta screamer and HS
don't want to have fan scars

lennytiger
11-17-01, 12:16 AM
A friend of mine had the end off finger ripped of by a delta screamer at 12v, he took the guard off and was messing in his pc while it was on!! (Your not supoosed to do that anyway:D )

The end of his "pinky" or little finger was hamging on by the flesh he had to go to hospital, and luckily they could fix it up for him...

He was lucky the blood didn't pour all over his mobo, that would have been in need of a hospital job too!

Oh Well Just A Word Of Warning For You Guys That STILL Mess With Fans While They Are On!!:burn:

EDIT:
I will never mess with fans in the same way again.

how do people do it? i'm yet to injure myself on a fan despite often running without guards. Worst I've done is knocked an unsecured fan over onto a screwdriver, threw two blades :(

I can't belive how people work in their boxes with them switched on!!!:(

ButcherUK
11-18-01, 12:44 AM
that wasn't in my box, that was just sitting on a desk, I rarely work in a powered box, just quick fixups.

Hey, I work on my cousins cases and mine all the time. I am getting ready to use a former HSF as a hard drive cooler (it runs at 4200rpm) and if it is something like this, I plug it into the PS and fire it up to see if it still works! I am not dumb enough to acually hold it by anything but the outer casing. The thing about people is that they just are not safe enough when working on things like this! Getting a finger removed is not cool! Trust me on this point. I am most cut off the last 2 fingers on my left hand and they don't even bend closed any more. NO, I didn't do this working on a comp. but with comp's and their parts running faster and faster; anything is possible!!!

****steps down from his little soap box****

Dont feel bad, after you get zapped with 220V from a dryer for 20 seconds, electrocution is not bad.

As for fan guards, I got to buy them as a while ago while I was working on my system, my index finger sorta fell into the fan, luckily just the tip went in, and most of my skin on the end of it was off.

Owwee!!

Heck, the other day I thought that I had the power off to a socket (110) I wass changing (we just moved into a new house) and found out that I hadn't! almost fused my pliers to the outlet box! I did trip the fuse after about 5 sec's or so:)

fuzzba11
11-20-01, 07:53 PM
The most I've ever hit was 15

4 80mm, 2 front intake, 2 on PSU
4 60mm, 2 on CPU, 2 intake
1 120mm top exhaust
1 92mm airflow director
4 40mm, 3 exhaust, 1 chipset
1 on Graphics card

When my watercooling is leakproof, I'll be at

4 80mm, 2 front intake, 2 PSU
3 60mm, 1 on chipset/over waterblock, 2 intake
1 40mm on Ethernet card :D
1 92mm on bong

and it will run silent :p
