I cannot find a replacement, im sure they're available but i dont know enough of where to look and what im looking for. the plug on the mobo of my laptop needs to be replaced.

the asus z71v - verry common plug almost all centrino laptops. i can guarentee the gateway g4540 (4540GZ) has the same barrel plug size. as for the backside of the plug i know what it looks like, but i cant describe it. ill take a pic next time i jurry rig it to work.

the problem is the pin in the center doesnt make good enough contact with the back part. its been bent loose- so the bad conenction causes the computer to squeal. loudly. and get very. very hot.
its a small plug, im going to try and remove it and take my fathers mig to where the pin meets the plate- but if that fails the plug will be destroyed. as in, tooled by a welder. which means id need a replacement on hand!

where could i go about finding one?

my friends lappy had sort of the same prob... the actuall solder connection cracked so it wasnt makin contact all the time.... so i opened up the whole lappy (pretty intresting how they pack everything in there) and resoldered the connector back on...

Sorry this is of no help to u... mabey try radioshack?

Don't even try to weld it, WAY WAY to much heat. With MIG we are talking like 1,000º F, plus it is next to impossible to control the wire for something that small.

Now trying to solder it is a good option. If it is just cracked you could probably solder the pieces back together, or possibly even bend it and solder right to the motherboard.

its not cracked off the motherboard.

imagine a barrel. in the middle of the barrel, theres a shaft. the shaft is attatched to the bottom of the barrel with a metal disk thats bolted to the barrel.

now hold the barrel still and force the shaft over- the bottom of the barrel breaks. THATS the situation.
i can de solder the entire plug and then try and weld that part- but if i could get a replacement it would be just as easy to solder on the replacement in the spot where i take this one out. the weld idea? well, if i could fix the one i have with a welder it wouldnt break again ;) it obviously wouldnt be anywhere near the rest of the computer to weld.

now enough of this repair advice nonsense, gotta find this plug!

thanks for the concearns, though. i do know how to fix it, i just need a replacement part.

Don't even bother trying to weld it, it's impossible. You will make a mess out of it and the socket will melt to ****. Welding isn't an option for such delicate pieces. Soldering the pin back on won't work either (if you could even get an iron in there without ruining the plug) solder isn't strond enough.

What make and model is the power plug? search for the plug by the laptop make and model, not by the motherboard, you'll get more hits. Laptop power plugs are all over ebay. I replaced one on my brothers compaq for the same reason, the pin got loose and eventually broke off.

The bottom of the "barrel" as you call it, is not any kind of metal. The center pin and the sides of the barrel are opposite polarities. The bottom has to be a non-conductor.

You will need a new plug. All Electronics (http://www.allelectronics.com/) should have stuff like that, much better than Radioshack, IMO. I just never remember the name, I had to look it up...

there is a back plate thats the bottom of the barrel on that peticular model- using silver epoxy / conductive paint will solve the problems fora short while but it will just get worse and worse until you replace it.

The power jack on my laptop is loose and I am repairing it right now.

You can buy a jack here: http://www.mcminone.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=MCMProducts&product%5Fid=27%2D2001

that really does look something like mine... im going to order one and prey its the right size/type...

i just opened this one again and got a shot of the inside- or at least whats left of it...

http://www.netman86.com/pics/tn_pwrplug.jpg

thats the silver epoxy that ive used maybe 5 times now. it just breaks off around the circular part. Ive contemplated a larger chunk, but if it broke off it wouldnt be contained. After every time ive done the epoxy ive coated it with some liquid nails- thankfully...because everytime some breaks off and it becomes loose again. a larger chunk might make it stay, but then it might break off alltogether and kill the mainboard.

theres a few plugs there, i have no idea which is mine.

Thats the one that looks most like it- appears to be the correct size/build.

i just ordered 3. We'll see when they get here... if its the right one ill throw a party and spread the word- i cant be the first person with this problem!

My DC jack arrived yesterday and I did the repair. It worked! This is the most complicated hardware repair I have ever done, so I'm pretty happy with myself.

The hardest part was getting all the old solder out of the holes so I could fit the new jack in. But this was my first time soldering so maybe there's some trick to it that I don't know. I soldered the new jack on there good. However, the solder is the only thing holding the jack in place. It's a really bad design, because every time you plug in or pull out the cable, it stresses the soldered points. So I figure it's only a matter of time before it breaks again. I will probably search for a different laptop, one that is more durable.

Then when I put my laptop back together, there were about 5 screws left over. Oh well, I'm too lazy to open it back up and search for where they should go.

The best place to find DC jacks is on Ebay. Go to the laptop section, and type DC jack followed by your laptop's model in the search. You should get many results. They usually cost around $2 plus shipping.

Anyways, good luck. It's not too hard, it just takes long.
