Okay here is the thing, my Windows 2000 disc along with my games and stuff is down in NC, I wont get it back for at least a week or 2, I had read u could install 98 inside of 2000, well my 98 disc was messed up but i had and win Me upgrade so i thought well ill install 95 and then upgrade to Me..well I got 95 installed with a uility that created a boot disk, I installed and now, 2000 doesnt coem up only 95, i thought originaly that I would be gievn and option at boot up which OS i wanted to go into, but I dont. it goes directly into 95.

Also I tried the FDISK/mbr command but it still boots in 95 (95=a tuf little bugger)

So is there anyway I can get 2000 and still succesfly complete my dual boot attempt?

I may upgrade to ME later (if I can thats is ) and see if that helps. Well PLEASE HELP ME!

This is why you ALWAYS install Windows 2000 AFTER any other Windows installation.

Win95, 98 and ME do not have a boot loader. Only NT 4.0, 2000 and XP.

What you will need to do is restart the computer either using the Win2K startup disks or Win2K CD itself. If you do not have these you can download them from BootDisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com), there are four of them.

Once starting up to these disks you will want to choose the REPAIR option (don't be afraid doing this as it will actually look like you are beginning to reinstall Win2K). It will ask you if you have a REPAIR disk...choose NO. It will then give you options of what to do. You will want to repair your boot record. If you have no options like this then allow it to go to the COMMAND CONSOLE without networking. Once you reach the COMMAND CONSOLE it will probably ask you for the administrators password.

Once at the COMMAND PROMPT type FIXBOOT. This shoul restore your boot record. After that type in FIXMBR or FIX MBR...I don't remember...one of those will fix your Master Boot Record.

Type in EXIT to leave the COMMAND PROMPT and reboot. Remove any disks.

This should fix your problem with Win2K, however, I would say you will no longer have access to Win95 since this completely wipes your boot record and replaces it with a default one. You can manually replace the entry into the BOOT.INI file for Win95 once you get into Win2K but if you don't know how don't mess with it.

Good luck.

In saying that I'm assuming it all went succesfully...I hope.

Glad I could help.

Just remember for future reference...ANY OS with an NT kernel gets installed LAST!

Have fun!

yeah eerything did go great but, when i boot up i have the option for Me or 2000, if i select 2000 it boots fine but if i select Me i get some error refering to boot.ini to do i fix boot.ini to that it looks for Me in the right place?

Now I have Windows 2000 on C:
AND WinMe loaded on c: as well

So if you can do the same thing with 98 and 2000, how do I fix it so Me and 2000 work? cause I have Me installed on my hardrive.

Also this is what my boot.ini looks like.
( i have also made 2000 my default boot so it doesnt try to load Me after liek 30 secs)

[Boot Loader]
timeout=60
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT

[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition"

should it look liek this?:

[Boot Loader]
timeout=60
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT

[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition" /fastdetect

Windows 2000 cannot share a partition with Win95, Win98 or WinMe. It must be installed on a separate partition since some of the system folders are shared.

If it worked before when you had Win95 installed then it was purely accidental and you were extremely lucky.

If both are installed on the same partition I would say that you have one mess of an OS right about now.

actualy no...2000 is running fine, but cant get into Me
also Me was running good as well (2 of my games that run without cd ran faster to)

Like I said. Only Win2K will be able to run.

Sharing of two Windows on the same partition is not supported at all. The only OS that can sit peacefully on the same partition as XP, 2000, NT, 95, 98 or ME is Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups.

If you want to dual boot those two you're going to have to do a complete FDISK and create two partitions...a C: and D:. Install WindowsME on either partition, doesn't matter and then install Win2K on the other partition.

This is the only way it will work.

Yep.

Also, if you only have a WindowsME upgrade from Win95 you will need to install WIn95 and then upgrade it to WinME before installing Win2000. A dual boot with Win2K does not allow you to upgrade any other operating system that is present...you will get an error message if you try it.

Just use a Win98 startup disk and boot to a command prompt and use FDISK to create two partitions. Make C: the active partition.

The other partition will need to be made a logical drive which will be assigned drive letter D:.

Format both drives. Begin installation of Win95 or ME until you are done. If Win95 is installed first, go ahead an upgrade to WinME at this time. Configure it if you want to. I also would recommend installing this on drive C:.

Then begin the installation of Win2K on the opposite partition of Win95/ME.

It's a pain in the butt I know but Bill couldn't make it too easy on us now could he? Haha.

Good luck and feel free to ask any more questions you may have.

Bad news is hard to give and worse to hear but learning is what it's all about!

Glad I could help!

Yes.. Thats why Microsoft doesn't recommend you running two OS's in the same hard drive.

Re fdisk to two.. and then reformat and install WIN ME FIRST!!! and then Win2K :)

And get SP2.
