what is the max clock for a socket 478?

I was able to hit 4.0Ghz with my skt 478 prescott, I imagine extreme cooling yielded much higher.

i hit 3.6Ghz on my 2.4C p4...but my memory was limiting me (PC4000) and my board was drooping like hell...it was an asus p4p800.

The max stock speed for s478 is 3.4GHz. I've gotten my 3.4E up to 4.25GHz for a few 1M SPi runs, not real stable though. It'll game all day at 4.11GHz.

Tough question to answer. There are mutiple makes of 478's that can run over 300 FSB. As for Max CPU speed I would bet better than 5 GHz. I have a 3.0 GHz Prescott that can run 4.2. Without too much trouble. Your question would be easier to answer if you were a little more specific.

THG managed to run a Northwood at 5.255GHz a few years back on liquid nitrogen. Not everyone will be running that kind of extreme cooling by any means but from that consideration you can conjecture that a prescott will go at least a fair margin higher.

alrite i got mine running on 3.4 for the past few days from a 2.8 pressy

but i read somewhere not to clock it past 3.4 i dunno why though and i cant find that link again, so ima try to clock it higher.

thnx

oh yea i got a

MSI 865PE chipset Neo2 mobo maybe that'll be more specific

You should tell us ram, power supply, gfx, etc., and we can tell you much more. As far as going past 3.4, it's only a bad idea if it won't work. If yours clocks to 4, does it matter what you read?

While still being wary of heat and overvolting this is pretty well the best OCing advice I'm heard in a while.

I got my 3.2e up to 4295Mhz, never did a TRUE suicide shot.

i got all kinds of ram in my computer... i think 1 512 stick of DDR333 ram and 1 256 ddr333 and it didn't go too well past 3.41 it would crash after 30 minutes or so of gamingk, so ima stick with 3.4

i got a antec turepower 2.0 430 watt psu, 6600gt agp @ 1.03ghz/562mhz, MSI 865PE chipset Neo2.... thas all i guess

need anything else?

I would guess you must be running a 3:2 cpu:ram divider, or maybe 5:4 & your ddr333 is overclocked to about ddr389. I think you would benefit from some good overclocking ddr400 or some ddr500 (matched set so dual channel is enabled). You may or may not get anymore out of your cpu, but the overall system performance would improve if you were running 3.4ghz & a 1:1 cpu:ram ratio.

WR on a 478 is 6 ghz i think
