I was trying to remove my hsf, and in the process cracked 2 of the corners of the core of my 1.4! I was so bummed. But then I put it back into the system and reapplied the hsf, and it booted fine! And my idle temp is now 40C compared to 60C before! Talk about lucky!

so lets see you burn it in for a few days and give it a benchmark. It would be interesting to actually see an increase in performance from a broken cpu.

I did something similar to that in my physics class. Accidently burnt out a resistor, yet somehow managed to lower its resistance.

Are you sure it was sitting right the first time? 60C is pretty hot.

But then again, if cracking the core works for cooling....where is my hammer :p

The extra cooling is probably just from a better HSF seating, not a cracked core :P

Yes I think the temp drop would have been from the reseating of the hsf more than a cracked core, did re-apply ASII or goop and did you make sure the hsf was seated properly the first time...???

yeah, i know the temp drop was not due to crack, but i thought it was great that instead of not even being able to boot (what i though after loooking at the core) it booted up, and MUCH cooler!

sorry...just made me laugh. That is a pretty cool experience though. gettin the hammer out to get a few more mhz will be the newest "trick"....haha, and you know we'll try it :D

yea, there are some stupid people out there that will try this......hell, if i had $100 to spare then id get another chip and try to see if anything changes....but thats just because i like taking things apart...aka breaking them

Some people have all the luck.... :D

Chip still doing great! I was worried it might die after a few days, but its still holding up.

do you have pics of the chipped core?
what i dont understand is how you can chip your core this easily and even when you take it off ... hope it never happens to me

usually the same thing happens to me!!!!!The computer is so cool, then i notice it isin't working:(

For me that did'nt happened.. When I saw the chipped core I said, damn, another tbird dead :D.. but I tried it anyway and it worked.. but 10-15c higher.. it was 50c load before, now its 60-65c..

that is too high if you ask me ... i would lower the thing abit
otherwise it wont take you long to burn it
btw that fsb is high (too bad you got it chipped) what t bird was it originaly?

Hey! try it on the cheap 800 MHz Durons that can be had for like 30 bucks! :D

The next time I take the HSF off to fool around with it in the attempt to drop my temperatures even more, I'll take some pics and post them. But for now, I don't want to push my luck and risk cracking it even more by taking off my super heavy Glaciator II.

Since you've already chipped the core, I wouldn't recommend removing the HSF again until you're ready to replace the CPU in case you do further damage to the chipped areas.

Do you remember how you removed the HSF and cracked it? I ask because I'v herd all these hore stories from my friends runinig their chip the day they get it and so on, but I had my K7 Athlon as a keychain in my pocket every day, and It was like a month before I chiped a corner.

probably not a bad idea, but I've already promised in the past that I would never remove the HSF again, but somehow i usually seem to forget that promise! Probably take me destroying my chip to teach me a lesson. I'm very stubborn...:burn:

I would put the hsf on and leave it because you can also ruin the motherboard with constantly pulling the hsf off it!

Well, I guess I'll try to stop myself the next time i get the urge.

it was 1.2ghz.. can't get it past 1237mhz

i'm not running it at this high.. that was the highest it would go..

Running it 133x10 (1ghz) because of the high temps
