I can't seem to get xbox live to work with my switch, Direct connection works great, but the switch says stuff about DNS and Gateway being wrong, or the Ip being bad... which is starting to **** me off... especially un-plugging my internet from xbox to computer all the time....
Please help
Paul
it might be because you are using a switch and a router, while I'm not 100% sure on that if you have a router try using that instead of a switch. Because if you are using just a switch your Xbox is gonna try to pull down another IP from your ISP and most ISPs don't allow that so that is probably why it isn't working I"m guessing because most ISPs only allow you to have one IP unless you pay for more. The solution is to get a NAT router.

Are you sure its not a router instead of a switch?

The problem is that you need a router. Get a router and it should work.
yeah can you also explain more about how your network is set up. Are you connecting to x-box live over some sort of dial up connection or did you all of a sudden get cable/dsl yesterday and are having trouble now that you got it? Let us know more about your network setup but I still believe it's just a simple as you need a router.

My network is setup with cable not dial up... I know basic networking.. I just wondered why xbox live doesn't work with a switch and it does with a router.
I'm having no trouble with the internet... I didin't have xbox live before and when I did get it it didin't work
I'll just buy a router don't even talk to me im an idiot....

No one is talking to you like you're an idiot which I think is what you meant by your last sentence. However, if we were, saying things like "don't even talk to me im an idiot...." will not help that situation.
As for why you need a router: it is because to be on the internet you must have an IP address. Each machine connected to the internet has to have one. When you hook up your computer and xbox to the router both machines try to get an IP address; your ISP does not allow this.
A router hooks to the internet but it only asks for one IP address regardless of how many computers are hooked into it. It then takes any internet request from the computer and sends it through its one IP address. This is called Network Address Translation (NAT).

Yeah we aren't trying to treat or talk to you like you are an idiot we are really trying to help you. I just wanted to know about your network setup because in an above post you say you origionally had dial up but recently switched so we just wanted to know what equipment you had changed and what you are using now because the more we know the better we can help you.
