Devil360 claims they cracked the 360 with out changing the drive firmware. Also, it seems the 360 will play hd dvd over anolog.

Did they post a tutorial yet?
I was planning to do a firmware hack when I get my 360 back to back up my games, but I'll see how this turns out.
Bah. Who needs HDMI? Component is good enough to carry a 1080i or 720p signal.
if its going over an analog signal, then the quality still will not be as good as HDMI or DVI because it must still convert it to digital. I dont think this would be substationaly noticable unless you have a very keen eye.
Also, I dont follow up on what studios put out what movies and what not. But if hollywood studios is the only one doing this, then what about warner brothers, paramount, ect? If I am right (and im am not sure that I am), then the only playback of HD-DVD on the 360 would be hollywood video studio movies. If this is the case, then the HD-DVD drive is very limited.
So main question here is, does hollywood studios include all of the production studios? And if so, how would this effect standalone HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players if they wont require the protection rights needed with HDMI and DVD?

Yeah, my 51" HDTV only has component and not HDMI, so I was starting to get REALLY irritated with all the HDMI talk, knowing damn well that TV is 30fps and movies are 24fps therefore HDMI was NOT needed nor is 1080p.

Isn't the max HD resolution the 360 can output is 720p/1080i anyways?
They both look great on my 1680x1050 LCD monitor via component. Looks like being played from a PC.
I didn't realize that the optical drive was also a blu-ray player also. How much data can Blu-ray hold again(soz being lazy)?
One of my friends who's in the know about 360 said something about depending on the model of your DVD drive, the mod chip will not work? Or is that a different mod that's being tested?

I think you're getting confused here. The PS3 uses Blue-Ray not the 360 and was originally going to REQUIRE HDMI to output at anything above 480p, but Sony realized this was stupid and amazing recanted. The PS3 is "supposed" to be capable of 1080p but I'll believe it when I see it.
recap:
PS3=Blue-Ray/1080p/1080i/720p/480p/480i
360=HD-DVD/1080i/720p/480p/480i
1080i = 1920x1080 30fps
1080p = 1920x1080 60fps
TV programs = 480i for Standard TV 30fps/720p for HD-sports 60fps/1080i for HDTV 24fps
Hollywood movies=24fps (same for VCR and DVD).
Therefore 1080p is ONLY useful in games as neither movies not TV will take advantage of 60fps in 1080, only sports-tv does in 720p/60fps.

well without HDMI your going to be watching downresed HD-DVD movies if the studios ever decide to enable the ICT flags they implemented.
yep, downplayed to 480p (edtv) if I recall correctly.
As for those who care, the difference between 720p and 1080i is so small its hardly noticable. So atm, 1080p, even if done with games is more of wasted effort atm.
I believe NTSC dvds run at 29.9FPS and PAL dvds are 24FPS.

That's true, but the original Hollywood film is recorded at 24fps so even if you played an X-men2 DVD on a PAL player the original source was 24fps so it would still be 24fps on the PAL and 24fps on NTSC DVD. I mean speeding it up 5fps would really throw things off, you know. It'd be like watching a Godzilla film with poorly synched soundtrack.

ICT might never be activated. 2012 is when it 'might' happen. By that time however I expect that it won't matter because every TV will have HDCP and the other DRM widgets.

but it looks sooo good, 1080i resolution and no horrible flicker when the camera pans across a wide shot.

I've NEVER seen ANY flicker except when playing Madden in 1080i and that is ONLY when a man goes in motion before the snap, I think it's the game not the tv.
Could also be caused by a low grade chip in the TV.

Eh? So, if I've got the Xbox set to 720p (theoretically better than 1080i), and plug in the HD-DVD, it will downscale to 480p and then upscale to 720p? :confused:

HDMI PQ is far superior to component.
I use DVI-to-HDMI on my HD CableBox to LCD and also have it hooked up to component and there is a huge difference. Same goes for VGA vs component on the 360.

Only IF they decide to implement the DRM functions on the DVDs

Yep, that is what all the HDCP malarky is about. And I wouldn't worry about the xbox360 modchip till anything is proven or shown working.

Really? I wouldn't think so since both are analog. I've not tried VGA on my 360 as my TV is projection and has only Component for HDTV :shrug: :confused:

Yea, I didn't believe it neither until I tried it. Fortunately I'm one of the lucky ones since my TV has all the inputs.
Picture is much more clearer and colors and at the correct levels. It also runs at a higher resolution which you will notice right away when you switch especially if you play arcade games and you can see 1/4+ of extra stuff on the screen which you couldn't with the component.
I took my Xbox360 to BB before I bought it and tried out the VGA cable over there. I was overly impressed so I got it to replace component.

Interesting, I thought component was as good as it gets but I didn't know there was a VGA adaptor for the 360. I just looked at the BB site and at the Psyclone HD/AV cable w/optical output... 59.99+tax.
Looks like I'll be spending more money... :cry
I guess now I can hook up the original Xbox via component to play the old games. Wasn't there a third party VGA adaptor for the old Xbox? I've always wondered how good the quality was on it on displays.

I don't have a Tv at all (my room at uni is too small), but watching demo 1080i videos that are online (most seem to be transfers of imax movies) there is a definite flicker on my monitor (a sony FW900) and on my brothers in some wide panning shots.
HDMI is currently a waste of money. At over $100 for a cable it no where near worth it. I have a new 50" Pioneer Plasma with HDTV Motorola box, that has 2 HDMI inputs as does my TV. Before, I connected it with my Monster Component cables, then bought a 3' HDMI cable by Monster. My family and friends all agree, there is absolutely no difference between Component and HDMI. Its a complete waste. The only thing HDMI is good for is cable management, since both audio and video use 1 cable. Otherwise it is pointless.

If you are watching a demo video off the web, it had to be converted to progressive to comply with dv standards. You weren't seeing 1080i as you would from a console game or OTA broadcast. So that negates any point you might have about 1080i inherently having flicker.

but er... I get the same from DVDs and NTSC ones are at 30fps (or 29.something something something).

Gotta love how billg has for the last, I don't know, 30 years or so, been ****ing off the home-built and modified computer folks (ref (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Letter_to_Hobbyists)) including myself. Maybe he's gonna atone for that. I say good for him, but I'm still mad. I expect to be treated equally regardless of my OS choice, thanks. :)
Screw 'em. I don't intend to buy very many microsoft products in the future, consoles included, unless there's a major attitude change.

For Bill or MS. He seems to be getting soft in his old age, but he isn't going to be running the show any more either.
I find it hard to believe that anyone who would retire to work his charity organization full time could be that big of a badass.
Maybe in his younger years, but like I said up there, I think he's getting soft with age. Although, he's been into the charity stuff for a long time.
MS will probably keep pulling the same ol crap though regardless of who is the full time CEO or whatever his title was.

Them = microsoft. Specifically Stevie the foot-ball playing Wonder (Steve Ballmer) should probably quit too. An upper management shakeup makes the devs feel better.
