I don't think it would be too slow.
I oc'ed a PII 233 to 275 with 256 Mgs ram. and installed XP Pro. It runs fine.
I haven't had a compatibility problem yet. And everything has worked fine for me either full install or installing over 98se or ME.

Windows XP should run fine on a p2 333 (if you have enough ram) but I think you'd be better off with Windows 2000. Win2000 is just as stable as WinXP but it will run a lot faster on your system. In any case win2000 will be a lot better than Win 98.

I believe it means you know have privacy as in you have to call them tell them your hobbies etc. they claim it is a bloated OS.

Why would you want to upgrade if you don't even meet the requirements?

And you'll need 256+ ram to run Win XP good.

It's funny, I still see no answer to the original question. What are the advantages/ disadvantages of upgrading to XP. For now I will stick to Win2K, stable and I know how to use/abuse it. I don't need a system that is hungry on resources, if I could go BEOS or Lynux with my software I would. Also for now I see no reason to upgrade to XP, my OS is stable and has latest patches and SP's. The more free memory available to my apps the better.
Softwebdev, we can all tell you like XP a little. But what makes it so good? Can you compare it to Win2K or other operating systems? I have seen a little of the OS, but don't know that much. Could you enlighten us as to what is good/bad?

i had w2k before winxp.......i like w2k too....however

GOOD THINGS which w2k doesn't have:

1- nice and beautiful interface
2-fast user switch. That means I don't have to restart the computer to switch to another user
3-running latest NT kernel. BETTER and STABLE
4-Media Player 8.0
5-faster boot time. It took 2 mins to boot in w2k. It takes 40 seconds to boot in winXP..............BOOTVIS is the best
6-MSCONFIG to troubleshoot startup or shutdown problem
7- IE6 comes right out of the box..............w2k has to download and install....too much time......:)
8- SMART BOOT which hide unneccessary thing to help it boot FASTER
9-SMART start menu.........know which programs you use often and be available for you so that you don't have to go through the list of programs in program menu
10-Accurate clock timing............automatically update itself to clock server so that your computer clock is 100% accurate every time............Never miss the appointment.....
11-Application compatible wizard help you run all kind of programs including w98...........................have game only run in 98?...........winXP is for you
12-DirectX 8.1 comes out with the box.........w2k has to download and install it...........AGAIN TIME CONSUMMING.
13-Remote desktop..........that means I can invite other people to trouble shoot my computer or I troubleshoot their computer.

...........................i'm tired of typing..........................anyone wants to add in this list?.....................................

BAD things ?...ACTIVATION....................after 120 days, i can install it in another computer if i want to........nobody says anything..........NO PROBLEM :)

if you are happy with w2k, you will be happy with winxp............and much more...............

thank you

Some of the features you included are available in Win2K. As far as I can see there are a few disadvantages as well, having to upgrade software costly and time consuming. Possibility of not reaching minimum specifications, using a MS product that has not had SP1 installed. You also list updates that have come with XP, 2 months down the line you will be in the same boat as me with 2K. What is the install size of this piece of minimalistic software a little more than 2K I would think!

i can't get it
some says that WinXP runs faster than the previous apps
how come? Isn't that the older version of apps should run
faster than the newer one because lots of features are added
and the whole programme is bigger? just a guess. May be
the programming code in WinXP is different that makes it
runs faster

some say "P2 is good enough to run" some says
"don't upgrade without the minimal requairment"
How's telling the truth? How stong my pc has to be
to run it? Well i am only having 96mb ram now

somemore all the new features in XP, can't we just
download it and install it in Win98? Like how some of the
features in WinME are available in Win98? EXPLAIN!!!

The min requirements to run WinXP according to MS is a P2 266 with 64 megs of ram. If you have anything less than a P3 and 128 mb you will have to disable a lot of the bloated unnecessary things that slow you down. If you play around with it, you can get XP to run smoothly even on a p2.

Ms is in the process of releasing SP1...........they are working on it now................i downloaded all the updates available at ms site.....the hard drive now is so CHEAP...........space isn't an issue any more..........i have 70 gb totals for 2 hard drives..........i don't even fill them up..........too much space..........i don't know if you know this or not...............microsoft is announcing discontinue supporting some of the programs including windows..................that's scary.................i'm not sure when w2k will be discontinued....................

about upgrading timing............isn't really a big deal to me because i format my hard drive at least 1 time a year.............

whether upgrading to winxp or not is not an issue................winxp is better than w2k in some way................that's why i choose winxp................

I think my honest advice would be to put the money into a newer machine. XP can wait, you will still be able to run all your software on an older OS. You won't be able to run newer software on an older system.

Don't upgrade, just not worth it for your speed and RAM

I don't like to spend my fortunate on my Computer, so I don't tend to overload my machine with RAM.

However, when it comes to WinXP, 256mb is the absolute minimum if you want to play games. The OS will eats up 128mb to itself and leave almost nothing for gaming....expect the pagfile.sys (swap file)

Win2000 is a better choice for 64mb - 128mb ram

___________________However WinXP has

#1 Absolute BEST Picture Printing Quality and ease of use
My HP laser Printer 5L's W2K driver deliver nice gray-scale to my photo, but I can always see the banding.

With the WinXP, the same picture print out is JUST ASTONISHING Georgous. The Gray-Scale is Flawless from black to white...almost photographic. I cannot even believe it is coming out of the same lousy HP 5L laser jet with only 1mb of RAM.

#2 Ease of USE. I don't need to add external programs just to do Photo printing. You highlight the picture you want to print, and WinXP is intelligent enough to present you with 8 common format: I can print entire photo, or 1 5x7 and two 3x4, or four 3x4 shots on 1 sheet, or 9 wallet size photo.

#3 Digital Camera support galore

#4 CLEAR TYPE, ANTI-Alisis TEXT on 2D screen.
It make my WEB PAGE appear like a magazine. After a while, it was really hard to live without this feature.

#5 FAST BOOT, WinXP will boot into graphic in under 30seconds. My Win2000 take about 1.5 minutes before I see a mouse cursor
