My 1GHz Tbird (266 FSB), unlocked, won't run at a multiplier higher than 8.5 on a Via KT133 MSI board.

The board supports a 100mHz bus, so I thought the CPU should run at least at 10 x 100 = 1000, rather than 7.5 x 133 which is its default.

At 8.5 Windows 98SE will boot and the system is stable. At a 9.0 multiplier it will POST but Windows won't complete booting, at 9.5 it won't POST.

Thoughts?

did you unlock the cpu your self if so did you do the L1 correctly.

y would you want to run at 100 fsb anyway as 100 fsb is slower than 133 so y not
just increas the multiplyer and leave fsb at 133
hope that helps :)

hope that helps :) The KT133 chipset does NOT support 133MHz(266FSB). You might be confused with the KT133A chipset that was later released for a 266FSB.

It's unlocked correctly. The default for this CPU is 7.5 x 133. I've run it successfully at 8.0 x 100 and 8.5 x 100. It will POST at 9.0 x 100 but won't finish booting Windows 98SE. It won't POST at 9.5 x 100.

Shouldn't a 1GHz CPU (in this case 7.5 x 133 default) be able to run that speed at a different, and reasonable, combination of FSB and multiplier, in this case 10 x 100?

The system is set at default core voltage and is running at about 30 C according to a Windows based MSI utility. Strangely that same utility reports only a 1.32 core voltage although the BIOS itself shows the normal 1.75.

doh!! should have noticed there was not 133A not a 133 sis you try to increase the voltage

I had the same problem. I have a 1 gig Tbird (266fsb, AHYJA "K") and an older MB from last spring that only had the KT133 chipset on it (100fsb). I ended up going out and getting another motherboard (MSI-6330) that had the KT133a chipset on it. It's much better than what I used before, and right now my settings are 10x140.

Maybe it's time for a new motherboard for you. Pricewatch.com or Newegg.com have some nice deals on motherboards.

How did you do the bridges? I had a chip that I used conductive ink to unlock looked at it with a magnifying glass and everything looked good but it would only get certain multipliers. The default on the chip was 8.5 it would do 9 but not 9.5 or 10 and the lower multipliers would only give me 6.5 and 7. So I took it out and redid the bridges and used a little thicker layer of ink and wala they all worked.

So what I'm saying is you might want to try redoing your bridges. If it came factory unlocked check to make sure that there is not a laser cut in the bridges that can barely see with the naked eye. If that isn't the problem then you might want to look into a new mobo.
