View Full Version : Few beginners questions
Hi just wondering if theres any options i should enable/disable to get better performance for folding, i just downloaded the setup from the website installed it and got going? (laptop is a centrino pentium m 735 1.7ghz)
Also have a p3 600mhz rig in pieces might put that together and start to fold but was wondering would it be faster folding under linux or win98?

For older rigs and lappys, I would set the configuration work unit preferences to deadlineless for what we call timeless tinkers. They don't produce a lot of points but they don't tye up the little rigs for days like those monster units that only produce a few more points. A p3 could produce some timeless units in 40 to 60 hours depending on what it gets. Some of them will be longer but not weeks that some of these Gromacs can take.
FoldOn
If your laptop is on all the time and you have ample memory i would run it with bigpackets=yes and the -advmethods flag set.
The older p3 hardware would be best with timeless tinkers like AC said.
If you are running the 5.04 client, you can set the advmethods flag in the client.cfg (careful if you edit the client.cfg ! )
How/what did you install for your folding? ie. 5.03 gui client? text console (v5.02 or 5.04), a manual service install based on the 5.02/5.04 consoles, or something like wedo's 1-click?
5.03 GUI should i uninstall and install the 5.04 console after this workunit finished/?
The 5.03 client can cause problems with other open g/l apps.
I would switch over to the text only version. You can do it before the current wu completes or just let it complete then setup a new instance.
There is a lot of info in the welcome sticky you might want to read before picking your setup. -> http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=386159
One of the most popular methods is to run it as a service and wedo-s 1-click is a painless installer ... just follow the instructions carefully and pick the right install option (single instance with -advmethods) here is a direct link to it but you can also find it in the welcome sticky -> http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=231247
Yeh was reading that but didnt know what advmethods was so got confused and installed the easy one :P will correct that soon, whats the SSE boost?, would i benefit from that or is that p4 only?
Edit - Just found the dictionary
you can move WU's around from one folding instance (ie. directory) to another.
To do it, make sure the folding instances are stopped first. The gui console will have some control to have it stop and exit.
If there is a WU in the target directory already, then move it to a temp/holding directory first.
A WU is the complete WORK subdirectory and the queue.dat file.
Then copy the 'WORK' subdirectory AND the queue.dat file from source folding directory to the target directory.
I don't recalll what directory the 5.03 client uses but it will be in c:/program files/ and is probably called FAH or something similar.
I always use cut and paste to MOVE wu's (WORK dir + queue.dat) around. This will help ensure you don't get any garbage files left in the WORK subdirectory.
After you move a wu, you can start up the folding program for that directory/instance and it will carry on from where it was as long as the folding instances were shut down properly.
Make sure you shut down any instance properly or you will likley lose it's current WU.
- the gui console has its built in control for this
- a text console running from the descktop (ie. not as a service) should only be stopped using ctrl-c
- and there are various ways to stop the text console running as a service ... from the ms services interface, or using the .bat files you can find on wedo's 1-click thread ....
Ok all sorted now :) Thanks
you are :welcome:
Happy Folding :)
