I need some info on this chip if anyone has any ideas. I think its 1.7 or 1.8ghz. I was wondering what socket this thing is and what is the highest ram it can take. Thanks. I know for sure it can take pc 2700 but i was wondering if it can take pc 3200.

Well as you can see from here (http://processorfinder.intel.com/List.aspx?ProcFam=483&sSpec=&OrdCode=) (with the filter change it to .18 micron manufacturing technology) it is possible it is either socket 423 or 478. I will put my money it is a 478 because you are using DDR ram instead of the RDRam. You can always but faster ram DDR400 (PC3200) but because of the dividers and such the ram will only run at DDR333 (PC2700). So yes it can take faster ram, but the ram will still run at the slower speed. You might(/probably) get better lentency.
What motherboard are you using?
It depends on what socket it is. There are both S423 and S478 Willamettes.
The processor does not determine memory support, that is a function of the motherboard choice. But DDR is DDR, except for the clock rate its guaranteed to run at. PC3200 will work in any 184-pin DDR motherboard.

EDIT: Okay, so i wasnt aware that willy's went into socket 478. Bummer.
Knowing that... assuming you have a intel chipset(and its a 478), its probably a i845 chipset... in which case your limit would be 3 gigs.

ok. Thanks guys. I'm not suer about the mobo. Prolly some intel mobo cuz it comes with some very noobish onboard video and sound. I'm prolly just going to use this for folding.
EDIT: from what you guys are saying, its prolly 478 and that was my guess from the start. Any ideas how well or poorly this thing overclocks?

one mroe thing. Any ideas how this cpu would compare to a xp 1700+ t-bred?

the xp1700 is faster, the p4 willamettes didn't have much L2 cache (or much L1 cache), a pentium iii tualatin-s 1.26ghz will run about par with a p4 willamette 1.6ghz. the cool thing about the p4 is sse2.

ok thanks. Then that leaves only one more quesiton. How far can this thing oc? IF its at 1.7-1.8ghz do you think i can hit 2.0ghz?

ok... so its s478 for sure. It's clocked at 1.7ghz. Do you know if this mobo is compatable?

i ran both my willies at 120fsb. 1.8@2.2 and 2.0@2.4.

ok sweet. So i might be able to get 2.0ghz.
EDIT: do you think it could be used as a media pc?

i dont see why not. they aren't THAT slow, as good as a celeron of the same speed.

Don't match it up with that Via-chipset based sh!te cuz it has the worst RAM-performance, and all you can offer such an old P4 is good RAM performance. Try to get a new or used Asus P4PE board, this will take PC3200 AND run Willamettes...

p4p800-se. this will also accept the adapter for dothans, should you ever want to take one of them for a spin. you might find one cheaper than this, just grabbed a quick link.

That won't support Willamette CPU's if I'm correct. You should carefully look for specs before you buy a new mainboard...

if its socket 478 i don't see why not. it should be able to give 1.75v.

Something else about the circuitry of the boards. The only board that I know of that supports Northwoods and Willamettes is the Soyo PI4845PE v1.0. The only reasons I know it supports Willamettes is because I own it and have read the manual. I am sure any board you look at go onto the manufactures website and it will have a list somewhere of CPU's supported.
Edit:

According to that (after you select his chip for the selection) The P4P800-SE supports the Willamette.

all i know is my willies worked in every board i tried them in, which was a few. :)
