View Full Version : Is There Anything Else I Should Know?

I've been living in the Dial-up world since 1998. Today, I finally got Road Runner, and I'm blown away with the performance difference. I guess what I'm wondering, is there anything else I should know? This is the first time I've used Internet Explorer. Do I need to update my version? If so, where do you find what version you have? I was reading about overclocking your LAN card. Do you automatically o/c the card with increasing the FSB. Where do you find your speed connection? Thanks for the help!

Install a Firewall. Remember that with RR your computer is on the Net even if your not surfing or in here.

Try out Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/index.html)

Zonealarm is good but do NOT buy the PRO version liek I did - I am havign serious problems with it!!!

Once fixed I will let you know what happened and how to avoid it.

The nic oc is just like all the other expansion cards: FSB.

To see what version of IE you have got to HELP in the menu bar, then ABOUT Internet Exploder.

For checking speed of your connection try DSL Reports (http://www.dslreports.com/)

BUMP on the ZoneAlarm thing! I have been using it quite a while--I was getting hit about 1500 times a day during Code Red's first fling BUT I NEVER GOT IT! I never tried Pro though; the free ver. does all I need.

I refused to even look at a cable-connected pc for a couple years because I KNEW I'd have to have it once I saw it. Sure enough, I had to help a buddy get his email fixed, and he had RoadRunner.

1 month later I did too.

Broadband definitely ROCKS!

I'm on Road Runner Myself, and you really don't need to do anything except install a firewall. Zone Alarm is the easiest to work with.
What version of IE are you using now and did RR have you install or install for you, any of their software? :)

I have 6.0 running now. Software? I don't think so. I just stood back while he hooked everything up. All I had to do, was log in.

IE 6 is fine. You shouldn't need to do much of anything except enjoy.

Have you had a chance to do any speed testing yet? I have Time Warner North East Ohio for my RR and I'm running between 1880kbps to 1937kbps down and a whopping 361kbps up.
It largely depends on who you have for an ISP as far as the speeds go though. Different areas, different speeds and providers.:)
