As title states, have any other brands come out with something to compete against the raptor? A 10k sata II drive or anything?

Western Digital is the only HD company without a SCSI div., this would be why there isnt any high end consumer competition (Other companies would need to take in consideration that a product like this might be caniblizing from there high end server line)
1 vs 1, no competition
in the same price category, buy two sata 2 drives for raid 0, will be faster in reads and writes, bit slower in acces times. Overall, better for daily use IMO.

The Raptor was designed to fill a niche market, which other companies refuse to acknowledge: us.
To a hard drive companies, if you need fast, buy SCSI. If you need storage, buy bigger. This worked for years, and still is a rather good philosophy. But there are some of us who wont shell out for SCSI, and the Raptors are a good alternaive. Though with the advent of the Raptor X, it's getting near the price of a SCSI drive + controller.

I think the only competition is the very large hard drives which naturally have bits packed closer together. This gives them fast read speeds without hight rpms. Like this one benches at about 62 MB/s Average, which is competitive with raptors: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=214 Not a bad price for a large amount of space. However I don't need the space so I stick with raptors
