Ok, fathers day is this saturday or sunday or something like that. Anyways i was thinking about building my dad a new PC. He needs it. His current one is like a P2 or P3 with mabye 128mb of RAM that somehow manages to run win XP. It use to run windows 98.

Anyways, i was wondering if there are any deals going on, for something decent and cheap, to bring him up to this generation.

I remember a long while ago some site had like a ECS motherboard and a sempron for $79.

Any good deals like that i would love.

I was looking at AM2, stuff considering it supports DDR2 RAM. I have about 7GBs of spare DDR2 on hand at the moment, and thought i could make use of some of it.

Are there any deals on like AM2 CPU's? Newegg has the AM2 3000+ for $105, was there any better prices out there. I kinda would like to get a motherboard, cpu, and harddrive for under $150 or so.

The harddrive doesn't need to be a monster 750GB one, just something like 80GB or so will work fine.

I got a case, PSU, cd-drive, and RAM, so all i really need is a motherboard, harddrive, and CPU. I would prefer the motherboard support DDR2.

I remember looking at the lower end P-D's. Have those dropped to the $100 or less mark yet?

Again any deals you guys know of post them. I will sort through them and give them a looking over.

All help is appreciated.

Edit: Ok a bit of intraweb searching has leaded me to believe that the Prescott Pentium D Celeron's arn't too terrible. So this is what i have come up with.

Motherboard - http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4136893?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
$20, supports DDR2, supports Celeron D, seems ok.

harddrive - http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4551457
$40, 100GB, cheapest 80GB hd on newegg is like ~$45, so i figure it's not a bad deal.

CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16819112203
$67, the Celeron-D.

Does that look ok for a person that checks email, browses the web, and types stuff in word occasionally?

If you're looking to stay under $150, I think the items you posted would work great. The performance is great as long as you do not do much gaming.

There's the OEM Celeron D 346 at TigerDirect for $50 AR (you will pretty surely get the rebate through OnRebate), but it's around $7 shipping and doesn't come with a heatsink/fan.

If you want the best value and performance, more future proofing pay a bit extra and go for the AMD rig i suggested, but if you are low on money the Celeron is OK.

also do know that the intel mobo u linked doesnt have onboard video so ull have to buy a vid card as well..

$90 celeron d 336 and ecs mobo @ outpost.
integrated video.

256K L2 Cache, 2.80Ghz, 533Mhz FSB

dont see how thats gonna be much better then the p3 that hes got now.

The amd on the other hand is faster, twice the cache, supports 64 bit processing, and isnt already obsolete.

PIII > Celeron D
is like stepping into a whole new world. Trust me, I know from experience.

The L2 cache difference is not that great for office apps, and we are far from standardized 64 bit computing.

Plus, it doesn't break the bank.

If you feel going AMD is necessary I suggest picking the cheapest (or one of the cheaper) AM2 Sempron chip and a cheap AM2 motherboard w/ onboard video.
$65 shipped for AM2 Sempron 64 2800+
$72 shipped for cheapest AM2 mobo (listed by nathan up there), plus a $10 rebate.

You're only screwing yourself if you get him a hunk of ****ski ECS board... you'll be mister fix it. And you may need a new PSU with this new system, I don't know for sure.

the real answer here is simple, either would be a good choice..just a matter of personal prefference

Last time I checked im allowed to express my opinions and ideas as long as they dont break forum rules. You can't can the truth of performance cw823 :p  ...

Well, according to you the Celeron is "already obsolete"...and that's where I take issue.

NOt discussing it here. If you want to continue this discussion send me a PM
