View Full Version : Swiftech Apogee vs Storm rev2

Is the second revision of the storm any better? Swiftech claims the apogee is slightly better than the storm, but in the best equipment roundup the apogee isnt listed and the storm is #1. Is there any real diffrence, and why is the storm $30-40 more than the apogee (I know it is more complex but what proformance benifit is worth $40 extra)
I'll have two loops, one dedicated to the cpu and the other useing parts I have sitting around. What block will work best in my new loop?
Pump: MCP350 with the Radiical top 1/2" in/out
Rad: Black Ice II Extreme 120x2
CPU Waterblock: ???Storm/Apogee???
Two T's for drain/fill
i'd heard the storm is better for bare cpu's
apogee for heatspreaders
i'd go with the storm if you want the best though, just seems better to me

It's a matter of whether you can push the pressure required for the Storm with your pump. Given that you have the MCW350, I don't know if you will even see a difference between the two blocks.
The Storm has the Jet impingement, meaning thumb over water hose effect, which will increase flow rate, but also the pressure drop. The Storm will perform better with a high pressure setup. The Apogee is a simple block with grooves into copper, and performs well under low and high pressure setups.
I will try to find a PvsQ curve, but it's late and I'm tired, so I might put it off for tomorrow.

i wouldn't go less than the 655 for the storm

Looks to me like the difference is negligible.

Would bumping up to a DDC+ or a MCW355 give me any benfit for either block? The pump will be modded with a radiical top with 1/2" barbs (whenever they get out of backorder).
Im kinda leaning to the Apogee, I was curious as to why the storm was rated higher here while swiftech said the Apogee was slightly better.

Unless you use the MCP-655 with the Storm, you will see no performance gain over the Apogee. Depending on the many other variables, you may not see any gain. the swiftech graphs show that the apogee is slightly superior in almost every way.

the apogee works great for me, although I don't really worry about a couple degrees. Fact of the matter is that if you have a good radiator, water cooling will keep your system sufficiently cool period... a degree or two here and there won't effect performance. Storm, apogee, they're both good.

get the DDC+ and just add the radical top to it. It has more head than the 655 and less heat dump. It is also quieter and smaller. Screw the storm... I'm a fan of the mp-05 SP LE. Its cheaper and the same peformance as the storm.

That's true, mp 05 and storm are a like, very close performance. As goes for stom vs. apogee, storm is a better choice but that's only couple C of difference.
DDC+ with modded top will perform better than 655 with much less noise and litttle bit lower heat dump

Would a storm have an advantage over a apogee in a bare die situation, the storm concentrated its cooling in the center of the WB correct?

oh my.
havent been in WaterCooling for a while.
This thread could use some reality-check and insight.
