View Full Version : As Newbie as it can be!
OK here is my system:
P3 700 [FCPGA]
CUV4X Asus Motherboard
2 sticks of 128 MB SDRam (100/133 dont know which)
What would you say I could clock this "old" machine to? I´ve read as muc hon overclockers.com as i could but I cant find how to examine what your ram is running at... Nor what my motherboard is running at.. not even my voltage (the box in the "roof" so tp speak of my comp :P )
Its nor that i´m new to computers i´ve installed ethernet cards hardrives soundcards etc... but i´m a complete newbie when it comes to overclocking. If you could point me to some good articles on Overclockers.com i´d be so happy :) If you think i´m a complete newbi who should RTFM and STFU and then never show his face here again then i might do taht but then i´ll blame this forum on my comps death ;)
Nah not really but I´ve read alot of articles there in the n00bie section and I need some answers to my questions please, oh and what is the FrontSideBus?, ive understood that is something you need to change to overclock...
If someone posted a good guide to overcklocking at the forum please send it this wasy too please :)
PS. Hope noone was offended by my post if you were i´m terribly sorry its just that i´m very new and cant find answers...
Flame on  (or answer  )
No one will flame you on this board ... We all come here to learn all of us aren't perfect so we share our information..
First of all when it comes to overclocking, heat is your enemy..
To find out your voltage and your temperature download
Motherboard Monitor....
Full Load(Download CPU Burn and turn it on for about an hour, full load is what temperature your computer is when under alot of stress) temperature should not exceed 45 Degrees.
To check your ram download Sisoft Sandra and then go from there.
Go into bios you should have a User Define option change your FSB keeping your multiplier 7 since it is unchangable..
Only change FSB and Vcore..
GO SLOWLY IF YOUR TEMPERATURE EXCEEDS 45 or 50 then go a lil under..
I would recommend a new cooler if that chip overclocks well.
Well you're in luck, that's a good CPU and motherboard for overclocking. I would recommend getting a good CPU cooler and using thermal paste before trying to overclock too much, but I would be surprised if you couldn't get at least close to 933 MHz (maybe more). The FSB is adjusted in your BIOS on that mobo and is also called system frequency. The multiplier on that 700 is 7X and your default FSB is 100 MHz (7X100=700 MHz). There is a program called Sandra that will test your RAM and other components.
Thx for the quick replies and i´ll check this out tomorrow since its 2 in the morning and my school starts at 8.20 ;)
So I havent gotten home yet... :(
I think i got a motherboard monitor with the motherboard CD... should I use that instead? And how accurate are thsoe things anyways? I mean its not like they have thermometer on the CPU =P About last summer i put in another fan in the front of my comp.
Yes, the motherboard temp monitor program should give a an idea what your temps are, you need to put a load on the system to check the CPU and system temps. SiSoft Sandra's "burn in wizard" is a good program to put a load on the CPU. I've also used the Unreal game demo loop with good success. Load CPU temps when overclock should not exceed about 40 to 45 degrees C. for that CPU. I'm currently running a P-III 700 on an Abit SA6-R and have been quite pleased with the performance of this processor.
Then i´ll check my temps when i get home... stil in VB class :(
Not over 40-50 eh? k if i´m cool enuff i´ll try some overclocking tonight... just a few MHZ :D
O and should i cram in a few more fans? any other cooling tips? and what is this "peltiers" i think its some metal plate between the CPU or something... ?

More fans is definitely a good idea.
Peltiers are used for tricky liquid cooling rigs.

What heatsink is on the chip? I would be a tad warry before overclocking with the standard heatsink.
heatsink? /me is confused
Heatsink = fan + big piece of metal attached on cpu.
Temps:
(idle)
CPU: 22-23
MOBO: 27
Voltage:
+5: 5,100 what are these?
+3.3: 3,400 what are these?
+12: 12,200 what are these?
VCore: 1.68 this is what I should increase when?
I´ll DL Sisandra and take som notes on when full burn....
Temps:
CPU: 38-40 Full load
"Burned" a cpu test 30 times stable :)
Thinking you have a retail fan .. Try overclocking 100 mhz first do the burn in and tell us what your temps are if it goes up to 50 go down right away..
But I highly recommend you buying some Artic Silver II and a good cooler before you try anything hardcore.
Temp while running multiplier at 115 so my speed is 805 now ;)
And i actuall saw a difference in booting speed already! i´m like WTF!!?? k3wl :D
oh you wanted to know the temp
arond 42-45 degrees at full load burn test at 30 reps...
ok i´ve figured out that when your win box doesent boot its time to raise the VCore right? how much is "safe"?
Oh and i´m running my SDRAM at only 100 how do i overclock them? (cant find my MOBO manual  ) 2 class mates seem to be clocking... i´ll tak to them in school tomorrow :)
man 20-23 and around 40-45 when at full capacity... dosent seem to high :D my brain sould and heart says MORE MORE MORE but my brain and mother says NO! :D i´ll have to wait till tomorrow at elast... and tis friday tomorrow.... MUST GET FANS
*begins to wonder how it feels to toast your first CPU...*

You should only increase vcore when your CPU's speed and need for power outstrip its supply of power. When this happens, your computer will get much more unstable; crashes in your OS of choice, not booting completely; not turning on at all - you get the point. Turning the vcore up too high will increase temperatures drastically, so you would have to be prepared with a good heat sink and fan.
As for your RAM, if you move the front side bus speed from 100 to 110, your RAM speed will also increase. You may still have PC133, and if this was the case, it would be safe to turn your front side bus speed up to 133 without risk of failure (on the RAM's part, anyway.) If you actually have PC100, you may not get much higher than you are now before noticing errors. On the RAM itself may be a small sticker with its rated speed listed.
I checked my RAm with Sisandra and its 100 :( its also CAS-3 so its not very good at OC :(... however there shouldent bee a problem to throw out those 2 sticks and put in one (maybe 2) 256 133mhz right?
and how much is the RAm clocked when elts say i increase the FSB by 15? is that 15mhz more on the RAM?
Thx guys i (at least i think) i´ve learned alot during yesturday and today.... thx alot :)
Oh and how exactly does the RAM affect my overcloking capabilites?
this is kinda strange... me and my friends were home during dinner and clocked my CPU to 933 and it still dident get any hotter then 45 *C :) could this be accurate ? it was measured with Asus PC Probe and it is a MB from Asus so it should be pretty accurate... i think  also it dident boot when we tried 140 FBS... this is probably due to my 100Mhz memory sticks :(
my friend had a 256 stick and a 128 so i´ll buy them hopefully soon :)
