Last time I had Redhat and Mandrake in..

But problem is it had no internet or at least I couldn't config it and I don't want Linux without no internet..

I don't know what could have possibly been wrong do you guys know ..

I mean maybe I didn't find a good command to change my computer name?
I have @home access by the way..

So anyways.. I heard it should do everything after you change the computer name..

the computer's hostname shouldn't matter.

Did you set up TCP/IP on your nic? How is your net setup? A nic in your machine, plugged straight into the cablemodem doing dhcp? Or maybe PPPoE?

Details would be appreciated.

Its been awhile what SHOULD I set it to?

You can set your hostname to anything, it doesn't matter.

As for your networking settings, you'll need to set them to whatever your isp needs. Probably just dhcp

Hmm.. What does setting DCHP include? I thought you would just check enable DHCP and wula?

The network settings are usually setup automatically. If you are using a current version of Mandrake you can use the Mandrake Control Center. There is a network option. Once you get to that don't change anything just close it. You should see Draknet launch and try to detect your connection. In Red Hat it was automatic for me. I did not have to change anything.

Thats is what I have been told too.. But would this problem occur because I'm on two network's?

One to one comp in my house and the other is Cable @home?

Ya, checking DHCP should be it, unless your distro is screwy.

Do you know if you nic even works in Linux?

Do an "ifconfig eth0" from a console, as root, and see if you get anything back.

Ok so you have one computer going through the cable modem and the other is networked to it? Which one is using Linux? You can use the Control Center again and it has a internet connection sharing option. Im new to networking with Linux so sorry I cannot help more.

I'm not saying it won't work just asking if that can create conflicts of me not getting to the internet

If what could create conflicts? You start of the thread saying you have no internet..

I have a Linux box sitting right on my cablemodem, and it works fine. Yours should too.

Mandrake has internet connection sharing, I believe that is what you are asking about correct ? You should have no problems I set up Mandrake with my cable modem and it automatically set it all up without a hitch. Just give it a shot and see what happen's all should be well. If not come on back and we will do what we can to help out.

I started off the thread saying I have no internet?

Read my first post

"I have @home access by the way.."

And my main question was whether my internet will work with it because last time it didn't.

That implies that you don't have any internet access with Linux, and you are asking how to get internet access with it.

Well.. Yes I will install Mandrake 8.1 and see what I can do..
