View Full Version : I saw the ultimate seti farm today 800 Alphas!!
Went to Celera who is partnered with Compaq and they have 800 64bit Alphas running at 833. I only counted about 30 towers so I guess with 32 in a box that would be about 800chips! How fast could they do a WU with this monster! I would love to see the servers but the security was totally insane. well I was totally blown away wish I had a picture.
Well, according to what spy says....
Topt = 278 (TeraFLOPs * CpF / MHz)
Topt = 278 (3.5 * 3.2 / 833)
Topt = 3.737 Hours / WU
3.737 / 800 = 0.00467125 Hours / WU effective time
WHICH IS A WU EVERY 16.8 SECONDS AVERAGE!!!
Ohhhhhhh...... *drools heavaly* GIMME 800 ALPHAS!!!!!!!! MUST CRUNCH!!!!!!

Well they are running together couldn't they tackle the task faster? I am not sure but I would think they could handle much larger chunks so times would be much much faster than that. I could be totally wrong but that was my understanding.

Only if SETI were multi-threaded...oh how I wish...
I'll have to see if I can find the pics I took when I visited the super computer lab at the University of Kentucky. It is the one called KLAT2 and had 64 Athlons tied together. Would be a nice little farm if even part time! ;)

I miss my lab!!! I had 40 PIII 933's. Their peak power is 120 Units a day! Not that bad.
I used to run the screensaver on about 500 iMacs and G3 towers. I got to about 2,000 wu's pretty quickly and then had to uninstall the screensaver because teachers were getting upset about it.:beer:
