hello

ive posted with this problem before and was told to get better cooling which i have done.

my old computer was a pII 450 with 256mb ram 1 stick pc-100 and a tnt card

ive overclocked my computer from 450 to 504 by upping the fsb to 112. I have taken out the pc-100 ram and put in 2x128 pc-133 sticks which takes the total up to 384meg. i also took out the tnt card and put in a geforce 2 mx. I have put in an 80mm fan at the front down low and also a card cooler under my geforce. I couldn't find any cpu coolers so i still have to stock one on.

The problem i still have is that in games it will crash out to the desktop with illegal operation errors at no specific time. A few times it has crashed out with illegal operation in NVOPENGL.dll and other times it will crash out with an error in the exe file i am running for the game. For instance if im running quake 3 it will crash out with an illegal operation in QUAKE3.exe.

When i first overclocked it i ran a q3 demo on loop for half and hour with the best graphics i could get and it didn't crash out. But then after that it has been crashing.

Do you think it is still a heat problem?
I was thinking of overclocking the computer and then formatting and reinstalling with the computer overclocked. Will this have any effect or will it still crash?
I was thinking it could also be a problem with my network card as it is pretty dodgy.
Is there something ive overlooked?

Thanks in advance

Well, you could try taking out the network card, however, your error problems would lead me to still go to heat. The stock cooling on the Slot 1's is not very good. I had a PII 450 at 518 with stock, when I tried a Golden Orb, I couldn't get it any higher. The reason for that is that this processor uses the old Katmai core, which checks it's cache at half it's operating speed. Try disabling your L2 cache in your bios if it's an option. Also, even with the L2 cache disabled, the Katmai cores are known for being bad overclockers. Especially the Katmai's at the top of the PII's... like the 450. I believe that's where the PII series topped off... the next processor released was the PIII 450. Because the PII cores were not meant to be run much faster than 450, most of them can't overclock as well as the PIII's.
