you'll need a primary boot partition, but if you're only formatting, it doesn't remove any partitions.
if it is a big hard drive like 30Gb or more ... than it would be a good idea to consider making it into two partitions.
I have 2 40Gb and both are broken up to where the primary partition is no bigger than 9 Gb and I use that ONLY for the os and program files all other file types and files I create with the programs go onto the other partitions. It helps to keep everything clean and running smoothly.

I have a question about partioning my 40GB Fujitsu HDD. I have it split right down the center into 2~20GB's and have Win98 installed on the first. The second though I would love to load with Linux, but how. I checked through Windows and found that it have 2 MS-DOS files on it that allow me to go to DOS prompt but I am not sure if I am following to correct path! HELP ME PLEASE!!!

WELCOME TO OUR SICKNESS!!!
Well I would break your drive up this way...
4 partitions,
#1 - 3Gb for Linux
#2 - 500Mb - SWAP partition for Linux
#3 - 8Gb For linux arcive ..
#4 - the rest all for windows
My set up..
2X40Gb total 80Gb
c: 8.5Gb - WinME
d: 3Gb - Linux Mandrake
e: 8Gb - Linux
f: 28.5Gb - Windows
g: 500MB - Linux SWAP partition
h: 28Gb - Windows
Numbers are rounded off...

If I might ask the next stupid question? Why would you break the HDD up into these sections? I am refurring to the first setup because if I get another HDD, it will be going into my 400 K6-2 which I plan on using as a gateway.

mostly personal prefference on how you want to control your hard drives...
with linux you need 3 partitions - roughly 1- 500mb, 1- 1.5 to 3Gb, 1- 8Gb - it is how Linux runs.... Also you dont wnat one drive to be too big... it can be counter productive becuase when looking for information it has to scan the whole hd where as if you chop up the drive - you can make it run faster cuase it will shorten your seek times on the drive.
does that make sense?
You will find that every patition has its own seek times. Test them all in Sisoft or the like and use the best one for the swap file.http://koti.mbnet.fi/antiqser/smilies/teleport.gif

Yah, Thanks. I am thinking about learning all about Linux and then deciding how much room to give the "home" partion. I would like to get rid of Windows completely and on my gateway; all I will have is Linux! Can you recommend a good version of Linux that I can pick-up for a good price but has all of the newest code? Free would be nice, but I don't think that the newest versions would be for free online without it being **whispers** illegal!!
I know from what a buddy says, you can distribute Linux no problem if you have it; but his burner is down:( Anyway, Thanks you guys:)

$25 bucks gets ya full blown Mandrake 8.2 on 3 cd's
and not do be hinting at any ''warez'' in anyway - the mods don't like that man!

it's cool dude - just gotta be carefull for legal reasons...
Linux is free ... to download and stripped, you are better off paying a few bucks and getting the nice box at teh store or online and have them ship it to you. You'll get more stuff with it.

I don't think that it's possible to have Linux warez. The only costs you should be paying are for the media, shipping and sometimes tech support (which you can get for free at this forum). I just got Mandrake 8.1 on 3 Cds for US$1 plus US$5 for shipping (I know that it's probably burned, but I'm happy as long as it works correctly).

Isn't Mandrake 8.2 out now? I am thinking about learning UNIX and Linux. UNIX so I might be able to get an admin job at the data center where I currently work as a security gaurd and Linux for fun.

Could be. You can check on any of the several Linux news sites. you might start with LinuxNewbie (linuxnewbie.org) for starters. (get it? Ha ha!)

Hey, I'm a newbie! Just kidding :) :) I am proud to be a newbie and if you think about it; you're a newbie until you know everything about computers there is or until you know all that you want to know. There fore, we are all newbies to some degree.
