ok so whenever i leave my computer idle for more than 20 min, the screen goes black and the computer seems to go into standby. my monitor however blinks its led as if there is a signal. i cant seem to resume windows when it does this.

this also happens during boot up, right before the login screen should come up. the only way i can get to boot correctly is when i use "boot last known good config".

any ideas on what can be causing the first prob? and maybe the second prob is related?

The first sounds like a routine power saving feature. Look in the control panel and see if it's set up to standby after 20 mins. Usually requires pressing the power button to resume from standby...

No idea with the second tho.

ok i realize now that the computer freezes when i turn just the monitor off and leave the computer running for a few min. when i try to turn the monitor back on, the screen remains black as if there is no signal and i notice that the computer has frozen. if i leave the monitor on, vista is fine.
