Cirrus Logic CS4630 chipset.
Ive checked out several linux hardware databases, and none of them have the santa cruz! But they have every other Voyetra/Turtle Beach sound card...

Finally! found a CS46XX driver on CS's site. Its soooo buggy! (the website) those people r crazy! Well, im in XP right now, so im going to email it to myself ;), then ill attempt to install it. I got some very basic questions here first...
1. How do you mount a drive?
2. How do you log in as root (in console, not gui)? I keep getting permission denied.
3. I have all the files for the driver unzipped, but what do I do now?

BUMP
Someone must know how to install a driver in linux. :|
1) mount /dev/partition /my_mount_point.
2) su will change you from a normal user to root. Otherwise, just login as root to begin with.
3) Surely they must have a readme with the drivers. There's a few diff ways for them to have made them.
Also, you might want to check out the Alsa Project (http://www.alsa-project.org). They write a bunch of good Linux drivers for obscure sound cards. You might see if your card/chipset is supported by then, it'd probably be better than using the CS drivers.

Thx for help, :) They have a 'guide' to installing them on their messed up site. (I cant even access the linux drivers section from linux!!!! But Xp opens it find!) In the install guide it tells me to put files in: /usr/src/[linux]/drivers/sound
Now im assuming that "[linux]" means the folder veries depending on distro, but that doesnt matter because in /usr/scr/ there is only one directory: /RPM, and in RPM there is /RPMS then in that there are directories like: i386, i486, i586, i686 all of which are empty. So i have no idea what they r talking about with that location, because there is nothing that resembles it on my computer.
Unfortunatly ALSA just gives me a link to CS's site.
This is crazy... I think linux could use a tip from BILL GATES on how to make installation easy for the beginner!... Now, if you'll excuse me, im going to log onto WINXP, and stay there until i find out what to do. Humph!
in this case, [linux] is supposed to be linux-your_kernel_version.
you are going to have to go out and install the kernel source (should be on the mandrake cd, kernel-source-something.rpm).
after that, you are going to have to compile your kernel. Not a newbie thing. CS could have made it easier, like the nvidia drivers. No kernel compilation required there.

OMG.
Can't access mandrake CD#1, permission denied. im logged in as root. Is there ANY way that *I* can get sound drivers - i dont care about features, just want sound.
If not, i think Linux might happen to disappear on my comp. Not too fun w/o sound.
Well, your cd should work. Worst case, you can go into windows and pull the rpm off the cd from there.
You could also shell out $15 for a used SoundBlaster 16 or something.

I really dont think i can do stuff like that... Bill gates has trained me well. I could buy a new Scard, but why would I through out a $100+ card for a crappy 1 for only linux? :) Maybe i could switch them everytime i boot.. :D
Thx for the help anyway, maybe one day ill try again.... (tomorrow probably)
If anybody can shed some light on this situation... PLZ DO SO!
There's no light to shed. I told you exactly what you need to do.
