With the new ata 133 coming out, I pondered on a thought I had. Which was faster- ATA 133 or SCSI hard drives? And I am talking about the fastest in each category.

SCSI without a doubt

*EDIT* do you want numbers?

scsi are much faster thin a ata133

even with 2 ata133 in a raid 0 you wouldnt beet a scsi

they are much faster however cost mucho $$$$

Yes please... Any data transfer rates would be very much apprecaited in my decision making process... I have my eye on some 15K rpm hd's.

Well as far as throughput goes, Ultra 320 Scsi(max 320Mb/s) as opposed to ATA133(max 133Mb/s). Up to you man but scsi always seems that extra step ahead.http://koti.mbnet.fi/antiqser/smilies/teleport.gif

if the most speed possible is time critical - then SCSI

if you just want fast then go RAID ATA100 or 133 - you really can;t feel that much of a difference if at all..

If you have bucks to burn, SCSI. If you don't, a fast ATA-100 HDD is pretty darn quick.

hey muff.

what's the application?

obviously 15k rpm drives will seek faster, and scsi's are capable of faster transfer. but it really depends on the hard disk itself. you can get an old piece of junk scsi HDD that can only transfer 15mb a second, even if you buy an adapter to hook it up to the ultra160sci or whatever controller you got.

i think the scsi is worth it's price only when you hook up a lot of drives (whether independantly on the same channel or via raid). the hard drives individually wont sustain the 160MB/sec transfer rate, but if you have 7 of them hooked up together on the same channel, you'll want every bit of bandwidth you can sqeeze out of the interface.

i can think of a few instances where scsi is a must. Audio/video drives, and servers. if you are talking for consumer applications, get a 4 way raid-0 system going with ata100 drives. cost less and work good.

4 way raid 0 would be AWESOME

scsi are just too expensive for what you get

you would need to run a big server to have to use a scsi

my friend has a small scsi hd for his server case and he runs linux and has to compiles some big stuff so he needs it
its very fast but for a average user there is no point in having it....

I have an 'old' scsi setup in my server. At least, my old scsi gears in the server;) The HDD setup is Ultrawide scsi......max throughput of 40Mb/s.......killer stuff in the old days (90's heh heh) but easily beaten by ANY ATA100 drive. Just remember that all scsi had to contend with was ATA(33), ATA 66 coming in and not quite cutting it speed wise(at least not in comparison to 40Mb/s UWscsi). Scsi is the king of multitasking. Cruising the net and other desktop applications run like a dream ; all the while Burning Cd's in the background with nary a coaster(sounds like b.s but I am meticulous when it comes to CD burning). And this was before burnproof showed its grubby little head. ..........sorry, getting a little carried away there. Anyway the fastest consumer model HDD I have heard of is the Cheetah XL.http://koti.mbnet.fi/antiqser/smilies/teleport.gif
