Sounds like you'll need to connect the NIC's in your and your brother's boxes to a hub. Then connect the hub's Uplink port to the cable modem. If you use a LAN router instead of a hub, you won't need to pay for two static IP's from the cable ISP. If you use a simple hub, I think you have to rent the two static IP's from your cable ISP, one for your bro's box, one for your's.

Why does everyone give this solution? No offence but I think it's a horrible way to do things, especially for anyone that can't afford to pay their ISP a lot of money.

What OS is on your bro's comp? Win95/98 doesn't support 2 nics, Win98SE and up does. XP and 2k have an IP masquerade built in (ICS) which makes things a lot easier. I don't think there are any decent free connection sharing programs out, there are things like wingate but I in my oppinion they don't work very well.

If you're going to buy an external device and hook your inet connection to it then buy one of those home routers. You spend a little more initially, but you don't have to pay your ISP a monthly fee, which saves in the long run. All you need tot do is make sure the home router has NAT and it will work for your needs.

I have no clue how to share internet connections with 98, but I think the easiest way would be for you to buy a home router, actually they're more smart hubs, routers are more complex, but anyways. Just find something with NAT.
