it's good, but nothing CRAZY... you guys do realize that hdd prices on regular sata and ide have been dropping like hot cakes...

I have been checking out HDDs for the past couple of days, because I'd like to have some extras for spare rigs, external drives, and emergency replacements. There is definitely a sweet spot in the price per GB ratio for drives around 250GB as you can see in the chart I made (yeah, I'm a nerd). This Outpost deal beats the best deal at Newegg by a good 25%.

EDIT: Bah, I just realized that this Outpost deal is for a retail drive, so the reduced price comes at a cost of a short warranty. I'll never understand why WD and Maxtor offer only 1-year warranties on retail drives, yet their OEM drives usually get 3 years or more.

Yes, it's the best deal around... if yuo're in need of a HDD, then buy it... I was just saying what I said b4 b/c I know some ppl in the Cyberdeals section buy stuff ONLY b/c it's cheap, and NOT b/c they need it. I was speaking for them... sorry for not being clear.

I disagree.Although the price isd good, the average seek time is nearly a full second slower than my 500GB SATA2 drive I just bought.If your looking for price, get the SATA HDD listed, but if your going for performance, go with SATA2 .I just got a 500GB Maxtor SATA2 drive for $163 off Ebay, so the price pretty much is about the same per GB as those SATA 1.5GB drives

EDIT: at what I paid for the SATA2 drive, you pay $0.326 /GB
The SATA drive listed in this thread costs $0.30/ GB

In the end, it cost $13 more for the SATA2 drive if you prorate the prices/GB.Personally, thats a small amount of money for the dramatic performance difference.

i am sure that we both know that some people are needing this for speed (as you are) but again there are also some people who are looking for just space. i know that i have been looking for the cheapest gb per $ ratio at or above 250 gb. i have lots of saved media from ripped dvds to recorded tv shows that i could use sheer size in a drive regardless of the seek times. guess it just depends on the application and intended use.

i know that personally i can't imagine having a 500 gb drive... those things are just massive in size! i still have too many 80 gig drives so all of my systems have small 80 gig operating system drives and larger secondary drives for storage...

Sure, HD benchmarks will show a faster burst speed as the SATA2 drives can take advantage of their extra bandwidth when they blow their cache, but for sustained transfers it won't make any difference. Also, the seek time has nothing to do with SATA1 vs. SATA2. Newer drives with more density will have faster seek times, hence the reason your 500GB drive performs well here.

Your acquisition of a 500GB SATA2 drive for $163 is not the norm, so I don't think it's appropriate to mention it in a Cyber Deals forum. Sure, you can find just about anything cheaper when it is used, but that's not the point of this forum. People come here looking for NEW hardware.

PS: I realized I made a mistake in my previous post and graph. I thought this was a 250 GB drive. Therefore, at $0.30/GB, it's not nearly as good a deal as I initially thought. I'd rather pay slightly more and get a longer warranty.
