After talking with various people at work (I work in a Data Center), I have decided to hook up my cable modem through a gateway. I am not sure if this is correct and would greaty appricate everyones input! I was planning on running the cable into a nic card on a 400MHz P!! (crappiest system I've got) then back out through another nic card and into a switch. From the switch I would run my connection to the 2 1.4's and the 800 as well as either fiance's laptop or to my 400K6-2. Does anyone think this will work well? I would like to use all of my band that's coming in:D

P.S.~ I am not trying to anger anyone with my remark about Pentium. I just don't like them:rolleyes:

In advance: Thank You ALL for your help with another of my stupid questions!!!!:)

1st off what you want is a router, not a gateway.

And it's a great idea for home networking. Most broadband companies are such tightwads they dont want you having multiple connections on your line, a router solves this, showing only one connection. It can also be configured as a half decent firewall if you know what you're doing. Why sacrifice the Intel, even though you don't like them?

Good routers are aplenty. Linksys makes a big selection, and the SMC Barricade is another, the SMC also has a built in print server so you can easily share your printer.

I was also reading in the reviews that not all routers are created equal. Do you know what brand would be the best for my situation (4 Computers going for connection at once; not likly but could happen); Say based on their memory and processing capabilities? Plus, will a router take over as my cable modem, or do I hook the modem up to the router and from the router to the comp's? Sorry but this has just kind of fallen into my lap here at home:rolleyes:
Thanks for all of your help:)

Sorry about posting twice but my cousin found this router on Price Watch and from what I have read here, it looks to be pretty good.
The URL is as follows: http://www.icuesys.com/products/routers/ibr640f.htm

What you think?

You can do this with coyote linux or freesco, both load from a floppy and are easy to use. I have a 486 running coyote and it works great. check them out at www.coyotelinux.com and www.freesco.org

The way you proposed will work fine, I had mine setup like that with a P133 for about a year before I bought my NetGear RT314 router.

I do prefer a hardware router since it's just so much easier to setup and configure.

The router in your link looks just fine.

:D You are all life savers as well as $ savers. I finally get a repreve in my computer buget. My girlfriend; who takes care of the bills; is going to customize her car after her last accident and said that I can spend some $ on computer parts if I want!!!!!
She is into graphic design so the fast systems that I have been putting together lately are making her happy.
