View Full Version : Old computer...what to do
I have a p2 233mhz, its all together and running. I was hoping that maybe you guys could give me suggestions as to what i could do with it (serious suggestions plz). Im looking to spend at most, $200 on upgrades. If i cant figure out what to do with it im gonna throw out the internals and just keep the case, could use it for another AthlonXP comp that im building in a month or so.

Is it overclockable at all? I would spend nine bucks and get one of those big dual fan heatsinks for it. You should be able to reach 75MHz FSB pretty easily. Then as 1300ts stated...you can run seti on it:)

It's possible to get 300Mhz, or a little over that out of it...

You could try putting it in your car and using it to play MP3s. I remebmer a thread about someone who was doing that with a 486, so your comp would be more than adequate. Just an idea.
make it a mail server or a run text from it for a web server
or you can do what my dad did, he had a old TI Notebook, i believe is was a P133
anyways, he loaded Linux on it and its the router for the20 comps in my dads house

Oh yeah. You could make it into a ghetto router (http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/articles/howto/Ghetto_Router_1.html). You just have to have some Linux skillz first.
Edit: You don't even have to konw Linux. It gives instructions on how to make a windows boot dist on the site too.

Make a simple upgrade:
CPU UPGRADE:
-If you have an Intel LX Chipset, I would try out the Celeron2 766MHz (66FSB) processor. It actually should work perfect! You probally will need a Slocket to Socket 378 converter. The newer socket converter boards have voltage selections right on there board!
-If your PC has a BX/ZX chipset, go for a 1.1GHz Pentium3 or get that ffpga2 Slocket to Socket converter and throw in a 1333MHz Tut Pentium3.
RAM UPGRADE:
Upgrade the ram in the Machine, LX handles PC133 memory, buy 'two' sticks of 128MB Micron PC133CL2 Memory for a total of 256MB.
GRAPHICS UPGRADE:
Last, LX boards or newer useally come with an AGP port. If it has one, your computer will rock once again. Simply upgrade the graphics card to a GeForce3 Ti 200 or ATI Radeon 7500.

Make it into a dedicated MP3/Game computer for you stereo/home theater system:)
Format, reinstall Windows and Winamp.
Maybe add a bigger hard drive if needed
Copy over all your cd's to it using CDex 1.30(free from CNet). If you have a scratched disc you can't get to play/record download the MP3 from Morpheus;)
Add a PCI card with TV-Out if possible to use your TV as the monitor or just use a spare monitor
Add a cheap soundcard(Soundblaster PCI128 works good) if you don't have one
Get a cordless wheelmouse from Compgeeks for $17 shipped, only if you get a TV-Out card cause seeing a monitor from 10 feet away is pretty hard to do:)
Good lord...just don't throw it out. I'll take it.
I give a home to all unused PC parts that are neglected ;)
Any of the above would make good choices for it (although I still like my idea the best, haha).
I'd say Crunch for SETI (or Fold proteins!) with it, and then you'll still have a spare pc if the New PC goes down (heaven forbid!)
And you can build a new Screamin' PC!
Seriously, if you build a new pc you'll probably want a newer cd/cd-rw and/or dvd, as well as a new hard drive, and be better off with a new case and power supply; you might as well just build the new one and save the old imho.
good luck either way!
i have an idea, either use it for SETI, or burn it!!!
but i think seti si better
So uhh, how about that 2 year old post...
