Well I think I need a new power supply for my power hungry 805D. When I run 2 instances of prime I get a fairly loud whine....close one down....it fades slightly. Close both...quiet again. Does the same thing with anything CPU intensive. Is it the power supply?
At stock 2.66GHz it's fine.....@ 3.0-3.4GHz it starts to talk to me.

I'd like to run at 3.4 since I paid $50 for good air cooling.
Can you suggest a good power supply?
I was looking at The Antec TP-550. I know it has dual 19A 12+ rails and that a single rail is better for the Intel. Would it work?
If not, can anyone suggest a moderately price single rail unit. OCZ Powerstream 520 is out of my range...this is only a backup pc.
What about one of the Enermax models?

Also...pay no attention to my sig....OCZ is now on the AMD rig and the Fortron is history. Haven't updated the sig...sorry.

If you're looking at an Antec TP 550W ....why not spend $10 more and get the OCZ ? (that's after the $25 rebate, however)

$105 - this should be in the cyber deals section :)

Actually go here:

And get it for less than $100 shipped!!! (http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=M&Product_Code=100346)

The whine might be coming from the board. Coil whine is not uncommon.

Jive: I found the TP-550 for $68 shipped after $15 rebate....so it really wasn't close to the $ in the link you posted but thanks for looking.

I have heard of the motherboard whining before...I have another 775 board I could test...UGH...I didn't want to change it out but I guess I should before ordering a psu I don't need.

Well...glad I went to the trouble to change out the motherboard. Whine is now gone.
Question--Is there anything wrong with the motherboard that was whining or causing the psu to whine? I have read a lot of different opinions on this subject.

it probably wasn't causing the PSU to whine. It was most likely the coils on the board that just couldn't handle the power draw clean. Would work fine non-overclocked but not overclocked, it seems like you've figured this out already.

Yeah...probably the mb I guess. I tried to isolate the noise using a paper towel roll but I couldn't pin point the exact location...just the power supply area.
All is good now...thanks for keeping me from wasting money on a new power supply. Of course new hardware is never a waste...just feeding the addiction.
