Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim

Savagebasher gave you some good advise....
In the end good media ends up cheaper when the garbage media starts burning coasters. Not sure why you started the thread when you had your mind set on those ;)

In any event this may help you

Based on personal experience and seemingly general concensus, all Verbatims will be safe bets.
For the record, the datawrite reds are awful.. shocking actually. My mate had some and they lasted only a little over a year before becoming unreadable. In fact, most of those discs didn't even play 100% correctly right after they had been burnt. I simply cannot understand how companies can get away with selling cr*p like that... they're very poor quality indeed. For the record, the yellows I had were a little better but still not great.

Either way, there's literally no point in using cheap media. Besides, if you shop around, Verbatims can be found pretty cheaply nowadays. Check out http://www.svp.co.uk - it's the best media site in the UK imho.

I'm currently using the "Verbatim 'Silver Top' (16x) DVD-R", which are £5.99 for 25 and use MCC dye. I've found them to be both excellent quality and value.
If you really want something that will last and is still great value for money, SVP also have "Verbatim (Taiyo Yuden) (16x) DVD-R" @ £6.99 for 25, which use Taiyo Yuden dye.. so they're pretty much guaranteed to be both relaiable and last one hell of a long time. I'll be buying these when my current stash runs out :). Just check out their ratings and comments on the site.. says it all really.

There's some good forums which you may want to check out before buying. I've found http://www.cdfreaks.com/ to be pretty good - over the past 4/5 years, I've learnt an awful lot about burning from those forums. Hope this helps.

DiscMakers, recommended by Plextor.

I've used about 400 of the 16x and have not had 1 coaster. Minimum purchase is 100 though.

According to RIPSTER's profile he's from the UK, so US sites prolly won't be of much use.

I had really bad luck with some philips DVD's, but the memorex ones I've been getting are pretty good. I've got memorex CD-R's, DVD+R's and -R's. I can't even remember the last time I burned a coaster, and they've always played good.

Also- bought some 16x DVD-R TDK's for a client cause they were on sale, are they going to be any good? Anyone have experience with TDK DVD media?

Hey mate. They may well be ok, for the time being at least. They may even last several years, but then again they might not.
If you need discs to be compatible/reliable, or if they're for long-term storage, just use some better ones. Quite simple really. As I mentioned previously (as well as basiliskdragons), the Taiyo Yuden discs have become damn cheap now. At 28p per disc on SVP, they're an absolute steal, so there's no real excuse not to spend a few more pennies and get those ;). They really are that much better.

Cheers,
Binny.

The thing to look for when buying DVDs is where they were manufactured. Japan or Mitsubishi chemicals = good / Taiwan or packaged in Japan = bad. Taiyo Yuden 16x (at least the ones I buy) are manufactured in Japan.

I've been using Verbatim for awhile and they are indeed good discs. I just bought a stack of Taiyo Yuden 8x and they score 1-2% better than verbatim on the average disc quality scan. Both are excellent, just buy whatever is on sale between the two at the moment and you can't go wrong.
