View Full Version : Need help with FDISK, going to dual boot.
Ok I have a 20gig Western Digital 7200rpm ata66 or dma66 hardrive, now it capsiticy is 19.1gig
How do I use Fdisk to make a Primary 9 gig partition for windows Me and a 10 gig parttion for Windows 2k Pro.
the exact bytes for it is 20,511,997,952 bytes.
I will format the drive as I have messed up and my dual boot attempt didnt go right...so I only have a C: drive with Windows Me and Windows 2k on it Im in Windows Me right since I cant get into Win2k. I have all my stuff backed up on a little ata 33 Seagate 4 gig hardrive ( 3+gigs worth of backup).
SO do I restart with boot didsk ( for WinMe of course) and format my my 20gig and then use Fdisk?
Then Install WinMe on primary partition? (9gig partition) and Win2k on second partion (10 gig partition)?

Bootup with bootdisk in, they go to fdisk. Easiest if you start from scratch, but either way. Jsut make a 9 gig PRIMARY DOS partiton, (it'll check drive integrity). Then get back to menu and make a n EXTENDED DOS PARTITON, of the remaining space, bout 10.1 gigs right. Then went is has ran its couirse set partiton 1 (PRIMARY DOS) to active (denoted by a "A" beside it). Then when installing ME on 9 gig just choose it. Then whey u go back to install the other os (if it is gonna be NT, Xp , or 2000, do not install as NTFS, or ME will not be able to read them-its a FAT32 OS) then it will search for previous OS's and it will only show u C:Windows ME, and not he blank partiton that you r trying to install the 2nd OS on ust hit ESC and it should show all partitons, not just teh Bootable ones, then u can install on it and leave it FAT so they can see each other.
98, 98se, 98+, ME are all FAT and can ONLY see FAT
NT, 2000, and XP are all NTFS (xp can be FAT) but if u ue NTFS withe a FAT in a dual boot they will be useless to each other. Id go for a 2000, Xp dual boot, or a 98se, ME setup. to stay away from probs

I don't quite understand you here m8. I've always seen it as 9x/ME can use FAT16/32. 2000 & XP can use FAT32 or NTFS. NTFS can see FAT but not vice-versa.

yes that is all correct, but i just didnt wanna go into all that, to try and save him problems , such as one not reading the other, youare 100& correcly. Its just easier to keep FAT with FAt and NTFS with NTFS. yes 2k can be fat and changed to NTFS later. I jsut wrote what i wrote b/c say he does 98se and 2000 both fat. Or he decides to upgrade later to NTFS, or just start NTFS wiht the 2k install, he have probs seeing one another, i try no to confuse when they are alredy confused. He didnt seem to familiar with dual boot, so i just kinda wrote it in SAFE MODE so it say
basically i didnt want him to install 98se (FAT32) and 2000 (NTFS) then not be able to see 2k with 98se.
okay guyz im a little confused, Should I reformat my 20 gig BEFORE I partition?

if you dont have stuff you wanna save, or if there is just empty partitons on it now, then yes, it cant hurt, and youll have just less problem doing it fresh. You can get any of im names and ill walk u through it
Well, I haven't installed a new OS (latest installed OS was Win95...) in a while, but if you FDISK a drive, you have to format it afterwards. So formatting it before FDISKing won't do any harm, but you'll still have to format it afterwards.... Unless these darn new-fangled (:D) OSs format for 'ya...
JigPu
Boot to MSDOS floppy and run FDISK.
Delete any and all partitions currently set.
Create a Primary DOS partition for ME. Set this partition as active.
It is not necessary to create anymore partitions at this time as Win2K setup will allow you to do this later.
Restart with MSDOS disk.
Format C:.
Install WinMe.
Configure ME.
Restart using Win2K floppies or bootable CD.
Use the remaining space available to you (will show as unused or unformatted space) to install Win2K. Format this space as FAT32 when it gices you the option. WinME can read NTFS v5 partitions over a network but not from the same physical disk on the same system.
Continue installing Win2K.
Configure Win2K.
You should now be able to choose which OS you want to start with after setup and configuration is complete.
Thanks guzy everything worked out, I got both partitions alrdy made and Win Me installed good, haveing a fw shutdown problems but im d/ling updates package from MS so hopefuly that will fix it. Game seem to run smoother under Me but my 3dmark 2001 scores are lower (???). Im getting my Win2k CD along with my Quake, UT and 4x4 Evo cds back, left my CD case down at friends house. He had better bring it up this weekend or im going to go all the way down to NC and get it myself...
