View Full Version : would 7/16" ID tubing fit over a 3/4" barb?

So i've been thinking of switching to 7/16" tubing. However, one thing that got to me was my pump. It was an absolute PITA to fit my 1/2" ID 3/4"OD clearflex over the D4 i have. Further research shows me that my D4 housing has 3/4" barbs and not 1/2" barbs (link to pics: http://www.lainginc.com/D_Series.htm). I knew something was up when the tubing's OD matched the barb's OD
Think i could fit over 7/16" tubing? Or would i need to buy the new housing?
It will probably depend more on the thickness of the tubing. You can get Masterkleer with 1/16" and 3/32" walls that would probably expand enough to be used. Heat them in boiling water before hand.
I wouldn't even try to stretch masterkleer over that. Tygon would probably however do it. I would probably just find a way to reduce the 3/4" down to 1/2". A copper 3/4" to 1/2" reducer should do the trick.

Stretching your tubing like that is just asking for a leak. Like voigts said, you're better off reducing it.

ack, anyone know where to buy a 1/2" barbed housing for a D4? Think I should just contact Laing?

Just ask them what the threading is. I've got some leftover 1/2" barbs I can send you. They are the high flow ones from DD.

I've fit mine over a 3/4" T before. I would never do it again though, I had to stick it in boiling water (try adding salt to raise the boiling point) then stick pliers into the tube and open them to stretch it out. Then while it was still stretched out, try to slip it on. I'ts not easy.

I would think that if you stretched it that much the wall thickness would be so thin that it could fail easily.

It's not a threading, it's a complete mold. As in, it's one solid plastic piece that's molded in the shape of 3/4".

why not just use a reducer? keep your 1/2 on it and buy a 1/2 to 7/16 coupler. then you will only have to have a small piece of 1/2 tubing and be able to use the 7/16

Not sure if I'd have room for the reducer in my pump->rad line. I'd only need one as well, as my tee will work for 7/16"...
I've heard that reducers can mess up flow though... Myth?
Your going to be reducing both the inlet and outlet from 3/4" to 1/2" anyway whether you do it with a reducer or with tubing. It doesn't matter. If you buy another housing, you'll still be reducing down to 1/2". Two copper reducers won't take up much room at all.

Actually if I am not mistake Maxxxracer did that and he said that it was a "bitch but he is glad because it was snug on there and NO chance of it falling off"
