I just about finished my tower, but I'm going to build another one right next to it so I can double the powah! The first one's sitting in my garage waiting for me to pop a hole through the wall into the other room to run a network cable over. I'm thinking I'll make roughly half for folding. I'll post pics once I have it up and running, but just to give you guys a hint of how much power's going to be in it, here's a pic of the outlet strip I bought for it today.
http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/4567/bigoutletstrip0vi.th.jpg (http://img91.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bigoutletstrip0vi.jpg)
I'll go ahead and say it's not going to be the prettiest thing in the world, but it'll be functional and I keep tellling myself that's all that matters:bday:

but you still haven't explained what you are building that requires that kinda power!?

So far it's got two rigs in it but should have plenty more by the end of the day. I figure I can probably pull off fitting two on each shelf, making a total of 12 compies. Once I get this thing full, I'll build another one either next to it, or most likely, in another room so it'll be on a different breaker.

I dunno, I bought like eight 8' 2x2's and a few sheets of 1/2" mdf. I used 3 different saws and 3 different nail guns. I'll eventually put sides and doors and windows and such on it,maybe some lighting and some pimped out cooling I'm designing right now.

I'm workin' on it, so back off!!!!
j/k I really am trying though, I should have something more impressive to look at eventually. All my dually rigs are being used for work and such right now. May try and buy a few 805 rigs or somethin' though.

You fill that bad boy up like you're planning, and you might just have to get ya a 5k BTU ac unit for it!!!

wait, wait wait!
thats one strip, with all that load, on one circut?
one household circut?
one household 15A circut?
one household 15A circut with other things possibly (probably) on it?
one household 15A circut thats only ever supposed to by code see 80% of capacity anyway?
on a cord thats probably #18sj or somesuch?
please, please please, dont die in a fire, you're a great teammate.
get your power issues proper...
and besides, the more you split the load up, the less voltage youll droop on the AC railz, and the less your PSU('s) will have to make up the difference.

sno.lcn

Don't worry, the other tower's going on another breaker so I'll have my farm on a total of 4 different breakers(I like to spread it out a little anyway:D)

aha! whew! good to hear you have a master plan... some people though, you never know.
good luck with it!

Damnit! Some lightning just took down everything that isn't on a UPS!(Including my vm rig)
It's gonna take me a few days to get everything back up and figure out which rigs were running which projects since I have several installed on each one.:bang head

*Edit: A couple of them won't even start now!

*Edit: I just remembered my bimmer's trunk is full of UPS's for some reason, this might be a good time to put them to use!

BIMMER?! Sounds like you have enough $$ to just give me all them comps and buy something worthy of that tower..conroe :)

sno.lcn
07-19-06, 07:40 PM
Well I got aar5 put in but I just realized if I plan on eventually putting 12 rigs in this thing, I should have bought something bigger than an 8-port switch. Got 2 left before I gotta get another one.:bang head

http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/4945/dscn1013br6.th.jpg (http://img90.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn1013br6.jpg)

And I got that 1ghz p3 that "died" back up so I'll try and find something to do with it once I get an os installed.

*Edit: Here's the newest one:
http://img103.imageshack.us/img103/990/dscn1070ef6.th.jpg (http://img103.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn1070ef6.jpg)

I'm sure you'll find something to do with that switch. ;)

BTW, the tower looks sooo purdy filled up like that!

sno.lcn
07-27-06, 04:17 PM
WOOT! My crimm's came today and this 1.4ghz p4 is working! I'll have this thing up on a project as soon as I can find my box of old hard drives and stick and os on one.:attn:

*Edit: I also pulled off a free upgrade from one of my 1ghz pIII rigs to a 3.2ghz s775 celery w/ an Abit sg-80(I know it's a crap board but it was free!) hopefully I'll have that up soon as well.

*Note to self: Don't forget to plug power into hard drives before trying to install an os on them.:bang head

...now to decide which project to run. Any suggestions? The 3.2 celery rig will be replacing the pIII so will run whichever project I have that on, but I have no clue what to run on the 1.4. A new project, or add some power to an existing one?

ohiosurfer
07-27-06, 05:10 PM
How about adding another one to BBC Climate Change, uFluids, or HardClash?

I picked these looking at the vault scores for each project...these three still have lots of points to be had. ;)

sno.lcn
07-27-06, 06:10 PM
Alright, I stuck bbc on it for now:D

I just got the whole tower moved across the room so it's not right next to my bed and I put a ups on everything instead of just the aar rig. I have one compie on every shelf now, and I think instead of putting two on each shelf, I'm just going to build another one with smaller, closer together shelves, maybe out of aluminum or something cool like that. I promise I'm eventually going to neaten up the cables.

New tower location: (Firing my VM rig back up:D)
http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/255/dscn1066am3.th.jpg (http://img47.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn1066am3.jpg)http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/6703/dscn1067fw7.th.jpg (http://img136.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn1067fw7.jpg)

I (stupidly) tried to plug everything into a small ups, and once I got all the rigs back up the ups started beeping and everything shut off. So I just put a bigger one on and it seems fine now. The power never goes out here, but it may flicker for a second during a storm like once or twice a year.

The little ups:

What I replaced it with:

nice job!

Is one of the ones you had down your red library rig? I noticed your points were way down for the day, just wondering. How much ram do you have in each layer?

sno.lcn
07-30-06, 11:52 PM
My red library rig/htpc is still down unfortunately.

To answer your second question, from top to bottom:
1.4ghz p4, 256mmb ram (bbc climate change)
2.8ghz p4, 512mb ram (aar5)
2.52ghz p4 @ 2.85ghz, 1.5gb ram (dimes VMs and RC5-72/OGR-25)
3.2ghz celeron, 512mb ram (eulernet)
533mhz p3, 256mb ram (simap) -switching out for a 2ghz p4 I just bought from jonspd
550mhz k6, 512mb ram (ufluids, primegrid) -swapping out for an 1100mhz athlon which is currently running ubero I think.
Everything in the tower is also running netDIMES except aar5.

The 2.4ghz htpc sits at my desk next to my main rig. It runs my rl clients and primegrid. I'll try and get it back up tonight.
*Edit: Apparently it runs mj12 as well. Anyway, it's back up now.:D

Karbon
07-30-06, 11:59 PM
I forget where I was reading this, either free-dc or ars technica or something, but one guy is running 60 clients on a p3 1ghz with 256mb ram. He has page file set to 2 gigs and apparantly it runs fine.

sno.lcn
07-31-06, 12:01 AM
dimes or red library?

Karbon
07-31-06, 12:08 AM
red library, 60 dimes on 256mb physical ram would be brutal

I have a p3 1ghz laptop (kubuntu) sitting here that just does dimes and seventeen or bust, I think I might switch it over to windows and do red library on it.

It doesn't seem very worthwhile though, even if I did add another 75 or so clients that would put us around 400,000/day max. The team above us in PPD gets around 800k/day

sno.lcn
07-31-06, 12:11 AM
I'll see if I can get a dedi up then.

that is blinging.

sno.lcn
08-18-06, 04:48 PM
I may be posting up a BUNCH of stuff in the classies soon. I'm toying with the idea of selling everything in the tower off and replacing it all with, say, 805 systems. That way, with the same # of compies we can double our production! The only downside would be not putting out any points in any projects for a couple of weeks while everything gets replaced.

*Edit: Screw it, I'll just get that other one built. I mean, that was the plan to begin with right?:D

I just obtained a couple free compies, one's a Athlon xp 2600+ (bios says it's a 2000+ for some reason) which is now up and running, just need to pick a new project to start. I think the other one is an amd of some sort, haven't even pulled it apart yet though.
No OCability whatsoever though. Hopefully I have another board laying around here.

*Edit: Just started us an eon team:D

**Edit: The WUs on this project go super fast, like 24 seconds each or something like that so we already have some points up!

Okay, the other one is a pc chips board(m825 maybe) with some kind of amd cpu soldered onto it. I'm out of ddr so I guess I'll have to wait to see what this is.
