how recently downloaded a home video (compleltly legal!) and it came in a unknown format to me, its one folder with about 50 files that say dmd-gmboy.r4 and one file that is compressed and is red. How do i burn this to a dvd?

Is it a RAR file? If so, extract it, then burn the video that is contained within it. You may need to convert the video to a supported format depending on what burning software you use.

That is in rar format. Use a program such as WinRar to decompress the file. It should decompress into an .avi file. Is that Grandma's Boy? If so it will decompress to about 700 or so MB. Great quality. You will need to convert it to be viewable on a set top DVD player, if that is your intention.

If it's just back-up then a program such as Nero BurningRom can be used to create a data disk with ease.

XviD is a MPEG-4 video codec. Regular DVD-players don't play MPEG-4, so if you want to watch files encoded with the XviD codec on a DVD player you have to convert them e.g. to VCD or SVCD first.... theres a lot of websites out there explaing how to do it, however the 'results' produced from converting from a xvid to a DVD format would be enough to make me not do this..
Personally speaking I would assume whoever encoded the home video to xvid may also have the file in another format as xvid is not generally used by camcorders.

Mind you the file you have sounds more like a split rar file to me

A fantastic encoding program is Canopus ProCoder. It's worth the purchase.
