Hello,

Im pretty New to the post (as well to the world of a processor faster than duron 600) and I was needing some expert (Or demi-Expert) brainpower.

I have just assembled a New system with a 1.2 but I feel it runs too hot I just want to get a second opinion.
The system is as follows:
Asus A7A266 (No sound onboard)
1.2 Athlon thunderbird.
512 (2x 256) PC2100 DDR SD (Running at CAS 2)
32 Mb Ati All in wonder (Rage PRO Chipset)
Promise ultra ATA100 IDE Card (I have 1 hdd and 3 cdrom's each has its own chanel)
Maxtor 40.0gb Ata-100 7200 RPM Drive with 2 MB Buffer
Sound blaster live 5.1
Linksys 10/100 NIC
Pioneer Dvd/Plextor 16/12/40 CDRW/ Sony 52x cdrom
And the fan is a Dragon ORB 3 (6700-7200 rpm)
and using artic silver thermal paste

Ok to the cooling... then the disturbing numbers.
I have one Sunon 120MM Front case intake fan. One Sunon 92 MM Back case intake fan. One generic 80mm Side intake can (case came with a nice hole onthe side for good intake.) And my own Home depot rigged 120MM Sunon fan blowing full force down on the MOBO as well as the heatsink (This thing gets a lot of airflow to the heatsink). And at the Top of the case I have a 92mm Sunon blowing hot air out of the case. I also got round (hdd/cdrom/floppy) cables in the case to improve airflow. AND I keep my apartment (seeing as 2 other comps in the house) at a cool 72% f in the house.

When I run (just startup not more than 2 minutes) My temp's are
Case closed Mb 28 Degrees C and Processor 48C
When I run the Computer for a while and use the Asus probe utility Even with all the fans running I read
Case (mobo) temp 31 Degree C and CPU 53 degrees C. Maybe im just overreacting but Im afraid to overclock the processor because Im afraid to burn it up if I keep it running too hot. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Welcome to the Forums!

ASUS temp sensors are usually inaccurate try buying a digital thermal detector you can buy one for like 15 bucks.

Also you have alot more air intake then outtake try turning the back 92mm fan to blow air out of your case and see if that helps your temps at all. A lot of people try and keep the intake and outtake equal so if you have 120cfm's going in you would want about 120cfm's blowing out.

K, I gotta take my Roomie to get his payckec. but ima going to go change that direction of the fan and let it run for like 15-20 mins while i run to the shack and get a tester.

I have almost the exact same system (seriously)

Asus A7A266 (No sound onboard)
512 (2x 256) PC2100 DDR SD (Running at CAS 2)
Maxtor 40.0gb Ata-100 7200 RPM Drive with 2 MB Buffer
Sound blaster live 5.1 ((Mine is Mp3+))
Linksys 10/100 NIC
Pioneer Dvd/Plextor 16/12/40 CDRW

All that is the exact same

Crazy, huh?

I have a 1.4 Ghz Athlon, and a GeForce3

The highest MBM5 ever got my temps was 70 Celcius

I would guess it was closer to 50...

Asus temp probe is way off, at all times, especially on this A7A it seems

Do you know of any problems with the A7V266, cos i'm having the same problems.

Thats interesting 'cos I keep trying and failing to keep this damn thing cool

oops:D

How far out are your temp, I really am having the same problems within a minute or 2 of boot up

My cooling ising too bad I guesss. (I get people saying you can go up to 70 fine. some freak out when I say it runs at 50.. dunno). I reversed the fan in the back of the case and in creased some airflow. Got a litle better. Staying stable at about 50.

But then again im used to the days my little duron ran at 35degrees C. oh well. My temps still stay around 50. ive yet to make a trek to the shak to get a real tester (since i hear the onboard one is wrong!)

It is weid that my bootup temp (like yours in the first 2 mins) does seem to be really high reallt quick. like boot.. then 47. And then it rises to its normal 50. Im just really afraid of it affecting my gaming. I think ill scrounge for some small cash in order to get a real tester. My roomate wants to know if his temps are right too. Thanks to everyone for their input!

Ok,

I Never got the tester. Couldent find a radio shack have to look one up. But i did go to the hardware store and get some stuff to remove the artic silver and stuff to lap the orb 3. I re did the heatsink and repositioned the fans in the system. as well as made sure all the fans were circulating and getting good airflow. got 2-3 degrees off only though. went from 51 or so C to 48.

I have hit 60 though. I want to overclock my 1.2. just worried about temp. Does anyone think I should be able to do it at these temps?

ASUS temps are higher than the other m/bs. But even they're not close to being accurate. AMD says their cpus can go up to 95C, but that's in the core. The probe being UNDER the chip, measures somewhere between 20-30C lower than the actual die temp.

On an asus board, this difference is more like 10-15C (out of the experience of most asus owners), so if your probe reports 60C, your core is like 75C with a maximum of 95C. If you dont experience strange crashes or lockups you're fine. I have gone up to 70C on my A7V266 with an athlon 1.4@1.575 and everything was ok for hours.

Try to equal the air intake with the exhaust. This doesn't give you good airflow by default (the case interior and the placement of the fans are very imprtant) but its better than no airflow at all.
The only way to lower the temps is to get the hot air out of the case as fast as you can.

Lowering the ambient temperature (room temp that is) is the best way to keep a low cpu temp. At 20-22C room temp, you should be at about 55C idle with no case cooling and at about 45C idle with good case cooling.
